I really want a HUSKY? ?

there soo cute. who has a husky here? are they esy to take care off, also i want it to sleep in my bed with me, would it like that or does it like its own space? thanks so much

um i live in canada and its really cold, we are moving to a big house. im 13, but i dont have any experience with dogs.

omg! ELLY your husky! IS BEAUTIFUL!! your soo lucky. you know i might not get a husky after all it does look like too much work.
any other breeds of dogs you can suggest to me.?

I love their look too :) I just got a female Siberian Husky last year and she is quite awesome. She has an awesome temperament with people and just likes giving them lots of licks. Sibes are not good guard dogs but they love being with people, so I am sure she will love to sleep with you. You just have to make sure it is not too hot.

However, Sibes are a lot of work. They are high energy and need lots of exercise. I have another dog (a Shiba Inu) and a pretty large backyard, so they tire each other out - somewhat. In addition, I take her on neighborhood walks everyday, and I take her for a walk in the park 3-4 times per week.

They also have a thick coat and they shed A LOT :) All year round they shed and twice a year they blow their coat so they shed even more.

Hmm, do you have a lot of space for it to run and play? In addition they need to be walked/ran with daily. Huskies have a lot of energy and you need to be able to deal with that. So if you are, i guess that would work.

Huskies are NOT cute. They are fabulous looking dogs & that's why so many end up in rescue. They are not easy to train, you can never let them off the lead, especially where there is livestock around. They will kill cats & any other small furries they find. They need a 6 ft fence around their area or they will escape.
They are working dogs bred to run & run & run.
They are a Spitz breed which means they have a very independant streak, which doesn't mean they are not affectionate - they love everyone & are hopeless as guard dogs.
You need to do a lot more research on the breed, don't just go on looks.

We really wanted a Husky also, but did some reasearch and found that a Shiba Inu was a better breed for us right now. We live in an apartment and Shibas are about 1/3 to 1/4 the size (15-30 lbs - ours is 27, she's on the big side), the same pointy ears, fluffy coat, and pretty face and markings (different colors though), they are cleaner (almost cat-like, they don't like getting dirty), less energy and requires less exercise (ours is a couch potato!). They are very smart, but don't need as much mental stimulation as a husky... huskys tend to get destructive if you don't challenge them mentally. And they have an adorable curly tail that huskies lack! :) Oh, and she wouldn't sleep anywhere but right between us on the bed! Check them out. They're great!

No, they are not easy to take care of, and no, it should not sleep in your bed.

Before you get a dog, you need to ask yourself if you have $500 to $1000 a year for basic expenses, and more for emergency medical expenses. Do you have the time and resources to train the dog and to socialize the dog and to exercise the dog? A larger dog like a Siberian Husky is going to need more room, more food, more grooming and more exercise. Are you going to make sure it gets 1 to 2 hours of exercise every single day? Are you going to brush it daily and get it groomed regularly?

And get the dog, no matter what kind, its own crate rather then making it sleep in your bed. It really isn't good for either you or the dog.

I had a husky for 17 years. Although I loved her to death. I would probably never own one again. They are very hard to take care of. As a puppy she chewed on everything. She pretty much destroyed our deck and door jams, ate the table legs. She would jump fences, break chains and run for hours. You could not catch her. She also had a terrible habit of killing cats. Once she got out and brought me home 2 possums and a cat. (kinda like a cat brings home mice) She was giving me a present. lol.
Zappa preferred her own space. She loved to be outside in the winter and would sleep on the air conditioner vent in the summer. She shed like crazy in the summer. We would have her groomed once a year to have her coat blown out cost about 90 dollars.
Okay now for some pros:
She was a great dog to take camping, she would protect our campsite from any intruders and would swim behind our canoe on 10 mile float trips.
She was great with people and children. She was easy to train to sit, lie down, beg and roll over.
She was beautiful and had blue eyes, people would actually knock on my door and ask if we would breed her they would buy a puppy.
The only way i would own another husky if i had a farm so she could run and enjoy life.

Basically what the others said.. plenty of exercise... no hot places BUT be warned.... during they re shedding seasons, they will shed GARBAGE bags full. Literally. Also i recommend you do a bit of research cause that dog is gonna be with you for at least 10 years.

Honey..."cute" is DEFINITELY not a reason to get a dog, especially a Husky. They dig, they bark, they chew, they have boundless energy, they need a job to do...they are not "loyal", they are independent. Are they beautiful? Of course they are, the most difficult breeds seem to be! Are they friendly? Most never meet a stranger, true. But they are the *epitome* of the phrase "not the right breed for everyone". They are not "sit in the house chewing sweetly on a rawhide all day" kind of dog. Unless you intend on giving them a job of some sort and intend on focusing a lot of your time for constant training, this is probably not the right dog for you.

Sorry...I have starred for the resident Husky experts, Loki and Ulva. They'll be able to give you more precise answers.

And also, as a Shiba owner, I wouldn't just go running to buy one of those, either. They have a lot of the same "negative" characteristics as the Husky, except for they're not quite as large or talkative...but they are escape artists and WILL NOT look back if they get out, they are not easy to train because they are clever and need a "reason" to do what you're asking of them. If not socialized *constantly* by the owner, the Shiba will inevitably be dog aggressive - I don't mean attack and kill on site, but will not tolerate play with other dogs...they are more people oriented. But they also shed buckets when their coat blows, even if the dog is smaller. My Shiba is adorable and people friendly and I love her, but I did MONTHS of research before choosing that breed and was completely prepared for this personality in every way...and I was still surprised at times. She is a bit more affectionate than the average Shiba tends to be but aside from that is a fairly true standard of the breed: stubborn as a mule and I cannot take her to a dog park or Petsmart or doggy camp because she does not play well with others.

Just another thought to think. :-)

You are 13 and don't have any prior experience with dogs? Then the Husky is NOT the right dog for now. In a few years, boys and friends will become largely more important than the "soo cute" dog you bought a couple years ago. They cannot be relegated to couch potato duty. My advice? If you are allowed to get a dog, start combing shelters with your family (after all, your parents will be mostly responsible for this dog it's whole life, unless you intend on taking him/her with you when you move out). They need families and you can probably find a young adult dog that meshes perfectly with your family's lifestyle and doesn't need all the extra stuff Huskies need.

ADD: Like I said, it doesn't seem you are too particular about the dog you get, so long as it is right for your family. The shelter is the best place to look for that...as you're not looking for any REAL specifics, you don't need to spend hundreds on a purebred. Adopt a mutt, love it like crazy and use this time to really learn about dogs. You seem to be a sensible girl (after all, it didn't take much to help you see that the Husky is not right for you yet), you'll figure it out.

Husky's can be a very stubborn breed. They are smart but seem to have selected memory!

If you get a puppy, I would advise to crate train him. This is not cruel because dogs think of crates as of a 'den'. It especially is helpful because puppies do have a tendency to chew anything! It will save your furniture, shoes and anything else their little teeth decide to try out!

Another thing that husky's are know for is if they run away, then run in a straight direction and most never return home. Remember that husky's are sled dogs and that is what they were breed for, to run forward.

If your looking for a "sooo cute" dog whose only role is to sleep in bed with you, you don't need a Siberian husky.

They are not easy to take care of, per se. They shed, they dig, they howl, they kill cats, they kill birds, they take off when let loose, and they do not come when called.

I have never owned a Siberian who wanted to sleep on my bed.

Yes, they are beautiful, yes they are friendly, but they are not easy dogs to own, especially for children.

You don't need one. And I doubt your parents want you to have one.

Getting a dog on looks alone is why so many Siberian huskies end up dead on the road or in shelters. If you can't promise that yours won't be one of them, don't get one.

I have had 1 pure bred Husky and 1 Timberwolf/Husky mix. They are not easy at all to take care of. They are incredibly stubborn and independent. They love to run and will escape any chance it sees, so, if you don't have a fenced in yard, I wouldn't consider it. They are very heavy shedders. If you don't like bags full of fur everywhere, then forget it. They are wonderful and beautiful dogs, but, they aren't going to be happy as a cutesy lap dog wannabe. They aren't a good idea for first time dog owners (as I was with my Husky/Timberwolf...an ex-bf gave him to me my Senior year in high school).
