I just answered this for someone else too. The first day of autumn will occur on the morning of September 23, 2008 at 12:55 am. Eastern daylight savings time. But it will be at 11:55 pm in the evening of Central Daylight savings time on September 22. Mountain and Pacific time will be 10:55 and 9:55 pm also on September 22, 2008.

I don't think this answer is right. For 2008, the First Day of Fall is Sept 22, 2008 at approximately 11:39 am. Here's an explanation. http://scienceworld.wolfram.com/astronomy/AutumnalEquinox.html

pink is wrong. According to Starry Night Pro (a popular astronomy software) and many other resources, the start of fall 2008 is approximately 10:33 am Central Daylight time on September 22, 2008. It begins when the Sun crosses the celestial equator to the southern celestial hemisphere.
