I do not understand why the United States would stand by and let Russia invade one of its own states(Georgia)?

I haven't heard but are the Russians close to the capital city of Atlanta?

Georgia is a country close to Russia that has vast oil reserves, created when the USSR broke apart. The oil reserves are believed to be the reason that Russia has invaded.

On a more serious note..., did you read what the "best answer" from Mich1? Russia is neck and neck with Saudi Arabia in oil production. It actually surpassed SA in 2002 as the largest oil producer for the first time since the 1980s.

Russia does not need Georgia's oil nor are they taking over Georgia. They are securing the South Ossetian's safety from the genocidal actions from Georgia. South Ossetian's are hoping they become a part of Russia.

The real reason why we call the Russian's bad, Georgian's good? Because of the U.S. interests in securing the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline which supplies the west goes right through Georgia and a small part of South Ossetia. Oil/Energy interests supercede human interests...always!
