Why do I cry easily all of a sudden?

Over the past few months, I have started crying at things on tv and in movies. It happens fairly easily. Before this I do not usually cry, I didn't even cry when my grandfather died. And to top things off, I have started to cry really easily in life (meaning not at stuff that happens on the tv). My friend and I got into an argument and she made a comment about a big mistake I made in the past and I just started crying (which is not typical for me). Previous questions have talked about depression. If that is so, why does depression do that? How do I make it stop???

Sounds like you have a history of repressing your emotions; you've probably reached your limit and so the softest of remarks can make you tear up or whatever. It may be a sign of depression, but are you having any other symptoms? Do you have many of these?
* Persistent sad, anxious or "empty" feelings
* Feelings of hopelessness and/or pessimism
* Feelings of guilt, worthlessness and/or helplessness
* Irritability, restlessness
* Loss of interest in activities or hobbies once pleasurable, including sex
* Fatigue and decreased energy
* Difficulty concentrating, remembering details and making decisions
* Insomnia, early–morning wakefulness, or excessive sleeping
* Overeating, or appetite loss
* Thoughts of suicide, suicide attempts
* Persistent aches or pains, headaches, cramps or digestive problems that do not ease even with treatment

Those are characteristic signs of depression taken from the NIMH website (link provided in sources)
There's no one cause for depression, sometimes it's from a chemical imbalance in the brain, other times traumatic events trigger it, family history of it, and many other factors influence its presence in an individual. If it's really affecting your life then you might want to seek a doctor's or therapist's help. It doesn't seem like it's really an intense form of it (if it even is depression) so you might get better after you reflect on what the root cause of your crying is. Why didn't you cry when your grandfather died? Were you close to him? What is this big mistake you made in the past? Did you cry over it when you made it? Did you apologize for it, and make peace with yourself over it? These questions may help you find the root of your problem.
Best of luck to you, and I hope the info I've provided helps.

    its very normal to cry easily at things. it could be that you are just a very sensitive person, or perhaps you have something on your mind. any problems at home? it is a bit strange that you just started to cry at things easily. that why i think it may be something thats on your mind :]

    Dont worry it's normal, some people are very soft hearted and get emotional very easily....Im the same way even my six year old daughter cries when she watches movies, I guess Ive passed it on to her.

    depending on your age it could possibly be just hormones from puberty and you could grow out of it eventually. If not then it just may be that you are becoming a more sensitive person, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

    I would just try to analyze the events before this happened and see what could have contributed to it.

    Just always try to think rationally, be calm and cool headed and don't let your emotions run you.

    The same thing happened to me recently. I think it is just because I didn't cry for so long and it all built up inside of me for so long. My friend said some stuff to me that made me realize that I had hurt her in the past without meaning to. All along I have been thinking I don't really affect peoples life's but now I know that I do. I guess it just made my heart open up a little bit more and now I cry more often.
    But if you are crying alot and it keeps getting worse and you are really sad about things then it could definitely be depression and you should probably see someone about it. But it is normal to go through times in your life where you cry. Crying is good for people.

    You have become more mature now than in the past. That is why you cry easily and that is normal. It's good to be emotional at times and you are also very sensitive.
