Do you think this is a puppy farm?

I think so, considering ALL the puppies they have available, the number of breeds, the mutts, and a lot of other things. But their front page sounds pretty good.

http://www.goldenstatekennels.ca/main.ht…

What do you think?

Just so you know - I AM NOT CONSIDERING BUYING FROM THEM!

Oh, and rather than yes or no, please explain your decision. Thanks. :)

Thanks guys. Exactly what I thought.

I posted an ad to spread awareness of puppy farms/mills and back yard breeders, adding that people can e-mail me with questions, and I was surprised at the number of people who appreciated it and even asked questions. Someone asked for me to point out some examples of farms and byb's, and I included that website as I saw 5 ads of available puppies on the website I was on (usedeverywhere). I told them what to look out for etc. You should do the same. (:

BTW when I said the front page sounds pretty good, I didn't mean I thought they sounded pretty good!

Kelsey, I don't think anyone thinks a lot of breeds are a good sign. I don't. But since you thought I thought that and tried to correct me, props anyways.

(I am not the one giving people thumbsdown btw)

Yes.
Way too many puppies available.
Way too many breeds available.
And no good breeder breeds mutts.
That is def. Puppy Mill/ BYB.
I dont care what the front page says.
Its not a good place to buy a dog.
And thank you for not even considering buying from them!
I dont even wanna know how many breeds they had there including designer mutts.

And the "pocket beagles".
Pocket beagles my butt.

Maybe. Most good breeders only breed one or two breeds, but these people have many. I don't really know. I guess the only way to find out is to actually visit them. Anybody could pretend to be a good breeder over the internet.

    Definately a puppy mill
Having that many different breeds and mixed pups to is a giant red flag.

The only true way to know is to see the place. If they are in cages then yes, but if they have a house and a huge yard then no.

Maybe, maybe not. They are undeniably irresponsible dog breeders though. They aren't breeding to better the breed. They have colors in their dachshunds that aren't recognized by the AKC. Who has ever heard of a cream colored dachshund? And they're selling mixed breeds for big bucks. No responsible breeder breeds mixed breeds. I also noted they sell a "pocket" beagle. HA.

    I don't like them.

Edit: Well. I'd never seen a cream colored dachshund before anyway. I guess they are accepted in the breed standards though. My bad.

That doesn't change that these people aren't breeding to better the breeds though.

I understand your thought behind the idea that since they have a lot of puppies and quite a few different breeds of dogs that they are a good breeder. A lot of people think this. This is not the case!! The more puppies they have, the more likely it is to be a puppy mill or puppy farm. Also, good breeders only breed one or maybe two breeds of dog. Breeders should be very attached to one breed. The best breeders do not always have a supply of puppies waiting to go to good homes. They only allow their dogs to have a few litters a year. Good breeders are not in it for the money. They are in it for the love of a specific breed.

Well, I would say that it isn't really all that legit of a place to buy dogs. But, this is just guessing. mainly b/c of the spelling errors on the main page. Many professional businesses usually have people who will check and maintain their website and advertising things. Secondly the photos that are posted are not really all that good. I'm not sure what I would call it. Usually Kennels are places where people can keep their dogs if say they are going on vacation of bug bombing their house, not really a place to buy a dog. And the fact that they offer a lot of different types is just kind of creepy.

Licensed my butt........that's a puppy mill!

Just because they're clean and appear to be healthy does not mean they aren't a mill.

Definitely a mill. I used to work for a kennel that was owned by a woman who bred Airedales. The amount of work that goes into properly raising puppies is amazing. They need as much care and attention as a human baby!
Now, mutts or even purebred puppies in an amateur's house aren't going to die, by any shot. But in order for those puppies not to be severely inbred you need to have at least 5 dogs of each breed, unless they're breeding the same female dog to the same male over and over.
Breeding dogs would have to be these people's full-time job.

Edit: Colt6, you're not 100% right. Many kennel owners are in it because they love dogs, and while they own a kennel to make money, they also have personal dogs of their own. The above mentioned Airedales lived in a kennel (as did their owner) and were crated or in pens a lot, but they were well-cared for and VERY well bred. She went all the way to Germany to get a good stud. Now that's dedication.

Personally I don't give a rat's *** about how many breeds someone chooses to breed or even if they choose to breed mixes. The things I am looking for in a breeder:

Thorough temperament testing of all breeding stock. - Preferably with sire and dam in sound temperament intensive work.

Through genetic testing for health problems. All those known to the breed - and in the case of mixes broad spectrum.

High quality nutrition of dam and pups - good physical development & health starts with nutrition.

Proper socialization and imprinting of puppies - the first few weeks of a dog's life are the MOST important as far as shaping personailty - it better be done right.

and finally PROOF that their dogs are better than everyone else's. I wanna see titles and championships, reconigation from reputable dog organizations - i want to see their breeding stock work. Even for dogs being bred for PETS There had better be some obedience titles and therapy dog certs in the sire and dam!

That said - it does not appear that this "breeder" is doing any of these things - I mena if you are going to sell puppies - you're gonna brag about the parents and all the work you've put in. I' wouldn't touch this kennel with a 10,000 foot pole.

ETA: About "pocket beagles" - they are sorta legit. Pocket beagles were common back in the victorian days - named for the fact that they rode in the saddle bag (or pocket) during hunts. They've been a bit lost in history - lumped in with the 13 inch variety (a proper pocket beagle is far under 13 in) Some *gasp* reputable people in the beagle world are trying to bring them back though.

That said in THIS case I'm sure these "pocket" beagles are just sickly runts.

Anything with a cutesy name get's snatched up by those BYBs awfully quick.

YOU COLD BE FAR FROM RIGHT! after taking a look at the website ,

from what it seems, they breed 3 breeds of purebreds, and some mix breeds kinda like a cockapoo witch is still a mix, no matter what way you look at it

as a breeder of Golden retrievers , my wife and i do it as the love for the breed so a family can take one home and know what it feels like to have the dog be a part of your family, when a family is in search of a new member of the home, a dog for the kids to grow up with and learn how to be nice to animals,

this place could be a mill or it really could be someone who really loves the breeds and breeds them, so other familys can take them in and give them a good home,
but you can not really say yes this is a mill, if the parents are not just used for breeding and breeding alone, if the parnents are also a part of the family and pets , then it would be hard to say that its a mill, cause then it might be love for the breed , in some areas were its hard to find the right puppy for some families, they search around to find one and this place could be out there to help,

if the puppies are healthy and well cared for, and when you go to see them they show that they have be around families before, then you might be wrong about it,

TRUTH IS, you can't call a place like that a mill, until you know the full background , e-mail them ask them about the parents and how the pups are take'n care of, if kids play with them at all before they get sold,

and you could be giving them a bad name when you don't know the facts,
