obviously all very different. at first, I couldn't stand Angela Lansbury, her voice really got on my nerves! I loved HBC, and thought she was really funny, and really easy to watch. However, I now think Angela Lansbury is better - her voice is so much stronger, a bit more 'crazy', if you know what I mean! And she has loads of energy...I find if you just listen to the movie soundtrack, without watching, you can really hear that HBC is a weak singer, and lacks the punch Mrs Lovett should have...so after all that, I'd go with Angela Lansbury!

Even though Angela Lansbury created the role, I think Patty LuPone's performance in the San Francisco symphonic performance (captured live on DVD, with George Hearn as Todd) was pure dynamite. Strong, tough, funny, seductive and even touching at times.
Helena Bonham-Carter, though a good match for Johnny Depp in the film, was essentially too young and not vocally mature enough to carry the role, though she did catch a lot of the character's essence in her portrayal.
    Patty's my favourite pie-maker.

I liked HBC's acting take on the role - very different to the other two - but her singing was just not up to it. Patti LuPone has to be my favourite Lovett.
