I don't know if it was the first free country as in democratically elected, but it was the first Western country. South Africa. And since then it's become the most violent country in the world outside a war zone. Murder capital of the world and a woman in South Africa is raped every 12 seconds.

This is the end result of rampant political correctness. People like yourself immediately see anyone who is black as "African American". HE IS AFRICAN. HE IS BLACK. HE IS NOT AFRICAN AMERICAN. Egad.

And the answer to your question is no. Liberia (and possibly Monrovia) were countries settled by freed slaves who based their nations and government on the USA.

Mandela is a great example of why you don't let the inmates run the asylum. South Africa was a stable and prosperous country (one of the few in Africa), then Mandela was given the reigns to the country and all hell broke loose. Economy fell apart, social order became non-existent, the country's standards became almost par with the rest of Africa. Hardly a stellar political figure.

Yes, Nelson Mandela is South African and not American. He is also not dead. I posted a list of all the first presidents of African countries since independence. Before that, there were Kings and rulers of empires and city-states. Ever heard of the Pharaohs of Egypt? Some of them were African as in black, some were more caucasian, depends on the time period. North Africans are often considered Caucasian and have features similar to Europeans, though of course, we're all mixed. Nubians were black as were others. Have fun. I do hope you know that Africa isn't a country of nationality. Ok? :)

Nelson Mandela is an African. I have never heard of him becoming an American Citizen. He was elected president of South Africa, his home.
