Can you tell me why italo calvino decided to write the fairy tale "the slave mother"?

did he? i've read his book or italian folktales cover to cover a dozen times, but i was under the impression that he was just gathering them from diffrent parts of italy. it says at the bottom of the story, (where the tale is from or who it is by i believe)
'terra d'otranto'
it comes from pellizzari acording to the back of the book.
