B. Because the invention was done in past. And it was told to students. However it was done for all mankind's sake.

because its past tense. Edison invented the light bulb quite a while ago. A, however, is present tense. You would use it if someone was inventing something now, like : He invents things for a living. --so, this guy is still alive and is in fact, inventing something right now. however, if it was : He invented things for a living. Then, the guy is either dead or he has moved on to some other career. It's all in the past. Hope this helps

A) Invents - this refers to present tense. This means he would be inventing the light at this very moment, which is obviously untrue for the following: 1) He died a very long time ago. 2) It has already been invented.

B)Invented - this is past tense. This means it has laready happened. He has already invented the light.

Invented: Because it happened in the past.
If you wrote, "invents", it would imply that he would have kept inventig and still is in the present.
