The answer is B. Invented.

This is because the sentence is in the past-tense, which you can work out by looking at the other verbs in the sentence eg. told.

The answer A. wouldn't have made sense in the sentence: Mr. Smith told his students that Edison *invents* the electric light.

That makes it sound like Edison is still alive and that he is inventing some new electric light, which, as we should all know, is not true.

And so the answer is B. and the completed sentence would be:
Mr. Smith told his students that Edison invented the electric light.
