Book Suggestions?

I'm 15, I'm going to be a sophmore and I reade quite a bit. I've already read all of the summer book that I need to [I know I'm a geek] but seriously, if someone could suggest some books that would be great. I'm going on a long trip this summer and I need some good things to read. I enjoy classic writers like Jane Austen but I also like more alternative authors like Carson Mccullers. I'm looking for something that's easy to get into like the Harry Potter series, with a good main character? I just finished reading Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant by Anne Tyler. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

The Darkest Evening of the Year by Dean Koontz.

Nickie comes into Amy Redwing's life after a frantic phone call. A woman with an abusive husband is afraid he will maim or kill the dog just as he did the family's previous pet. Amy runs a rescue organization for dogs and is especially concerned about Golden Retrievers. She takes her boyfriend Brian along to pick up Nickie, and the moment they meet her, their lives begin to change. Nickie is beautiful and peaceful, and Amy knows right away that she will keep Nickie for herself instead of putting the dog up for adoption.

That night, mysterious things start happening. Lights turn off and on in Amy's house, and Nickie reminds her of a night many years ago that she has struggled to put behind her. Back at his apartment, Brian spends hours upon hours compulsively drawing pictures of Nickie; eventually he begins to hear the beat of huge wings flying around him. As it turns out, Brian, too, has a secret past.

I got that story snippet from the actual website for the book. I loved it. It was a wonderful story. Take a chance and read it- you won't be sorry.

It's not fiction but once you start it, you can't put it down. It's called The Hot Zone by R. Preston and it's the story of the ebola virus, how it started in Africa and how it spread around the world. I know this doesn't sound exciting but it really is. And the way Preston writes, it feels like fiction. Unfortunately, it is NOT fiction and it will also scare the pants off you. (Tonight I am starting another Preston non-fiction book about - no kidding - the search for the edge of the universe. Now is that fascinating or what?)

Also, an old Somerset Maugham novel called The Razor's Edge. Just a great story about society, and money, and mysticism that takes place in the Midwest, Paris, and Tibet. It was written in the late 1930s so the way people lived may seem old fashioned but the elements of the story are timeless. Bill Murray made a movie of it in the 1980s and it SUCKED. However, Tyrone Power (very handsome actor) and Gene Tierney (gorgeous actress) starred in a fantastic film version of the book in, I think, 1939. It's a black and white film but the story is so interesting that it doesn't matter. Actually, I think it's better in black and white than it might be in color. But the book is very absorbing and great summer reading. If you read it now, I guarantee you'll want to read it again five or ten or fifteen years from now.

If you like that, you will want to explore Somerset Maugham's other works. There are several volumes of his short stories.

Don't forget old classics like Gone With The Wind.

More recently, there are good mysteries series by Robert B. Parker (character named Spenser) and Stuart Woods, who has a couple of characters, one of them a female cop named Holly Barker who has a Doberman Pinscher and lives in Orchid Beach, Fla. (close to my heart since I have two Dobermans).

Oh!! And you must NOT forget The Thief Who Couldn't Sleep series by Lawrence Bloch. (The thief, named Evan Tanner, was involved in some experiment in the army that destroyed the sleep center in his brain.) One of the books is actually titled The Thief Who Couldn't Sleep.

    Happy reading!

Wizards First Rule by Terry Goodkind.

Amazing writer. You'll love the main character. And there are many books so if you like the first one, you will have lots to look foreward too!
