Advice on buying limited edition books?

I'm attempting to purchase a signed & numbered 10th anniversary edition of a Poppy Z. Brite novel. The publisher is entirely sold out, and has been for some time, but I've found it on a private bookseller's website. Yes, it's the exact same book with all the added bonuses; publication was limited to 750 copies.

Anyone had good or bad experiences buying a collector's item this way? And yes, I've tried eBay.

Hoplite, thank you, I wouldn't have thought about quite a few of those!

Yes , as a former book collector I have found these treasures in some of the most obscure locales . One of the keys to collecting books is do they have a low print-run and low distribution ? Many editions are limited to a small coterie of die-hard collectors who have access to the inner-workings of the book industry . (Undue access , one might say .)
Are the books serialized , first editions , printed upon acid-free paper , are questions to be asked , et.al.
However , my collecting of books are now restricted to the least expensive paperback editions . I wish I could refer you to a more erudite answer .
Good luck !
