"Sugar is not a vegetable" is a line from a Gertrude Stein book that sparked a debate between my friend and I

Question

Asking the question well, then what is it?...she thinks a condiment..I think not...we would really love your thoughts and ideas on the matter. Just so you know...we know what the proper definition of sugar is..we just want to know exactly how one would categorize it.

Sugarcane is a perennial grass.

For a food group, it's classified as a "Sugar, chocolate and related products".

Sugarcane is considered an agronomic crop like grain crops, such as corn, wheat and rice, so is usually not classified as either a fruit or vegetable.

I would plump for vegetable, but it is so refined that it really becomes a condiment in the process.

I actually recently had a debate with my friend on this. It does start out as a vegetable, but then is processed and chemicals are added to make a new product. So it's like tomatoes and ketchup. If you concider ketchup a vegetable, then sugar would therefore be one too. But if you thik the adding of chemicals and flavorings makes it a condiment, then sugar would be as well.

It's refined & added to food to add on taste for a particular person..
It comes in individual packets like ketchup & mustard.
It's on restaurant tables with the ketchup.

It is not a seasoning like salt & pepper.

it starts out as a beet- we have a sugar beet factory here-- so technically it starts as a vegetable and ends up a condiment
