Why does my cat love to bring me dead animals?

He is such a nice cat and is so proud. Are they my gifts? Mostly just mice and birds.

hi,
its sort of showing some gratitude or to say to you that you belong to its family, if you notice carefully, some of them make strange meow when they get the dead animals. Other such acts include rubbing its back on to the ground in front of you, slow blinking of eyes etc...

He does rub his back on the ground and blink his eyes. He kinda lays on his back and looks up. I gave him some left over chicken from last nights dinner to show him "thank you" I know people food isnt good but I wanted to give him a present back since he is part of the family : )

Your cat is proud and want you to praise him because he thinks it's a good thing to do what he's doing. Cats love to hunt!

If he is the only cat than yes he could be trying to 'show off' or maybe hes hungry.

You are his master and he wants to please you! My cat does the same thing with my doll's clothes and some beanie babies, she pickes them up and pretends to kill them, and then sits them in front of my bedroom door, so cute!

He thinks of you as family. He's trying to contribute to the family food supply. Take the dead animal (so he won't think you're not pleased and go get more) then dispose of it immediately. You don't know what kinds of diseases those things could carry. Also, make sure he's up to date on his vaccines....

Most cats do this. He is showing you he loves you - he's giving you a present! You should praise him, because remember, in cat world, animals are yummy and hard to catch. He worked hard to get you a little gift!

Your cat is trying to take a share in supporting the household. He is sharing the food he has caught with you, the same way you share the food you "catch" at the store with him.

When I lived out in the desert, my next door neighbor's big ol' tom cat used to bring a couple of mice every day to my (spayed) girl cat. He was sooooooo in love with her, and wanted to see how great he would be at supporting her and her babies if she would ever let him father them. Nevermind that that family already had a queen with whom he had sired and raised many kittens, he wanted my little girl too.

yes hes rewarding you for everything you do for him... our cat does that too ....and puts the dead lil animals on our welcome mat by the door lol my brother throws them away when hes not looking... so he doesnt know lol but really think its nice its the thought that counts lol but im really not fond of the presents... i just act like i am lol awww arent kittys nice too us...but really act like its so nice and pet him hes really tryen too please you... he worked hard at it too.... awww...

Returning with the spoils of the hunt is their way of proudly bringing back a gift to their guardian. Normally, cats see us as a parent figure, but when they present gifts of prey, they see us as their kittens. Accept the gift graciously and properly dispose of it. Big cats in the wild present prey to others in their den as a social gesture. Perhaps they prefer to share it in safety where chances of theft are slim.
