What would happen if you forgot to switch an iron off and left it running for overnight?
Would it start a fire?

Leaving an iron on definately increases the chances of starting a fire! The iron would have to be knocked over or touching something flamable though - like a shirt.
I've accidentally left an iron on all day. My house didn't burn down, but I was scared enough to buy an iron that automatically turns itself off (I have a cat and two dogs - YIKES!).
Also, an iron uses about the same electricity as 20 lights being left on.

This is why I have an iron with an automatic shut-off. I do not wish to think about the matter.

Only if it was knocked over on a higher heat. I left one on in the spare room for a few days, all i noticed was that room was a little warmer when i went in, which was nice because it was cold that night
