What is the most environmentally friendly car on the market?

The most environmental car should get high mileage, have been produced with least impact on the environment, and be dependable for many years with minimal maintenance. Finally, tailpipe pollutants should be low.

I think the answer to your question is the Honda Clarity FCX http://automobiles.honda.com/fcx-clarity… . It has zero-emissions (no tailpipe), 270 miles on one fill up of hydrogen, all (if any) maintenance is covered by Honda. The only bad part, it's not being sold yet, only leased for $600 a month in S. California... but it will be available throughout the country a year or two later.

Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid Named 2008 Green Car of the Year

Along with the Tahoe Hybrid, the jury considered 2008 Green Car of the Year nominees including the Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid, Mazda Tribute Hybrid, Nissan Altima Hybrid, and the Saturn Aura Hybrid.

What’s eye-opening is that the Tahoe’s 21 mpg city fuel efficiency rating is the same as that of the city EPA rating for the four-cylinder Toyota Camry sedan.

The Tahoe Hybrid is the industry’s first application of hybrid technology in a full-size SUV. While a few vehicles with V-6 and V-8 engines are offered with hybrid options, most hybrid technology is incorporated into mid-size or smaller vehicles with four-cylinder engines because this is where big fuel economy gains are most readily achieved. It’s a different challenge to achieve meaningful mpg increases on large vehicles of greater weight where substantial cargo hauling and towing may be needed, and larger engines are required for the job. For instance, the Tahoe Hybrid features seating for up to eight passengers, a 60 cubic foot cargo volume with the second and third row seats folded, the ability to carry up to 1400 pounds of cargo, and a tow rating of up to 6,200 pounds.

The Toyota Prius for 2007 wasthe number one selling car of its type. It went from 35% of the sales in 2006 to 51% of all sales of vehicles like this. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the 2008 Prius is the most fuel efficient car sold in the U.S. According to the EPA's revised estimates, the combined fuel consumption for the 2008 Prius is 46 mpg–U.S. making it the most efficient car available in the U.S. in 2008.

Note; As the the mileage of this vehicle The epa says more than the 46 but Consumer Report found that the 46 was inline with what they got from the vehicle. I would hold off on buying a new one this year for 2009 the Prius is supposed to get almost 90 miles per gallon some reports say over 100 miles to the gallon but I have read others that say in the middle 80s per gallon. also for 2009 they will have a moon roof and the car will be slightly wider but shorter also. I will point out that All of these folks that say this is the car of the year, I say,"Bull Sh**!" If you go according to Motor Trend they make the car of the year the one that the manufacturers will pay the most to have that said. If you could check and see who they rated as number one over the last 15 or 20 years you would finf that some of the Company names are no longer even in business. Read Consumer's Report and who ever they selctas the best car is the one that I would call number one not some magazine. Please keep in mind that your question is which vehicle is the most environmentally friendly and that is the Prius, hands down

Prius doesn't get anywhere near what the manufacturer claims for the MPG. That coupled with it handling like a boat, and the weird off-center driving position means it's pretty useless.
Look into new Saabs. They have very advanced emissions systems these days, and they drive a LOT better than the Pius.

For an Environmentally friendly vehicle that is also inexpensive (REALLY good incentives right now!), with high tech available options (like "SYNC") , and is American made (supporting America's economy)..take a close look at the 2008 Ford Focus:
    ----------copied from Fords website-----------
The 2.0L Duratec 20 I-4 is engineered with dual overhead cams activating four valves per cylinder. For 2008 this powerplant features new air intake system, cooling and exhaust systems designed to improve smoothness, responsiveness and efficiency. You can go a long way with its maximum EPA-estimated 35 Hwy rating.* There's also the Duratec 20E offered in states that adopt California emissions standards, qualifying Focus as a Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV). With both Duratec 2.0L versions a 5-speed manual is standard, with a 4-speed automatic available as an option.*EPA -estimated fuel economy highway with 5-speed manual transmission. **Standard on S, SE, and SES models in CA, MA, ME, NY, and VT; available on retail orders in AZ, CT, NH, NJ, NV, OR, PA and RI.
    ----------------end copy-------------------------------

There is also a great lease program right now with payments as low as $179/mo.
a great value, keeping "green" while saving "$green$"

A green vehicle doesn't have to be an expensive "Hybrid".
In fact, a PZEV Focus puts out LESS tailpipe emmisions than any hybrid on the market.
A vehicle would have to be full electric to be considered ZEV.
    (zero emissions vehicle)
