How do I hail a taxi in GTA4? PS3?

I can't seem to hail taxi's in GTA4, I hold L1 but nothing ever happens.

you need to bee near a taxi. but if there is some in it one in it you will need to ether get another 1 or chase it down because it wont stop. press and hold triangle and you will get in (even if there is sum1 all ready in)

From a curb or street near a cab you press L1 and Niko will whistle and wave to get the cab's attention. After he's got it stopped go up to it and press AND HOLD the triangle button. Make sure you're almost right at the taxi so you don't carjack another car.

you have to get really close, or even chase it down, which is totaly brutal. Or you can just hop it yourself right? .

well if you are still in the begginging of the game you cant. That option is given after a mission. If you are kinda far then i guess you just suck

You have to be close to them.
