PEANUTS - I just planted peanuts in the garden. Now how do I keep the crows and squirrels out?

Last year they dug them up and ate them.

Peanuts and corn both.

We feed the crows and the squirrels, (and guess what we feed them!)

Any ideas?

Get a Mr Peanut cut out (life size) and leave a squirrel tail hanging from his mouth with a hand full of crow and leave him by the garden. No really. Go to the hair salon and see if you can have some hair clippings, Take the clippings and put it in a hairnet with some shavings of Coast or Irish Springs bar soap and put the in you garden. to the animal world everything is about smell. This will smell like someone is standing near or hiding waiting to get them. you may try a dog groomer for hair clippings too.

Both answers are priceless!! Wish I could split 'best answer' with 'laughing'!!! SO funny! and helpful too. I will try that stuff you both said. Right now I have a huge owl cookie jar out there with a face on both sides of the lid!! Thanks again, Y'all! Love your humor!

You just planted Peanuts??? In the ground?? Everyone, including Snoopy?? Pig pen is probably comfortable..

Depending on how vast your peaniut patch is, You might go the hardware store ( I like to support Mom and PoP type stores) an look at the different types of design and with a good thick gauge, yet bendable.. also get two rebarb type metal rods, enough to go the distance of your new crop to be. (regarding the wire and steel rod, or rehbarb))..
the "screen" is similar what some folks use for Waskly Wabbit Hutches, and vewy, vewy carefully, secure the wire screen material to the rebarb, on one side only.. using well..paper clips wrapped around the rebarb "use pliers and save the fingers"!),to securely connect the screen to the rebarb, but use steel, no plastic. Dig a trench as deep as you dare, the length of the patch, on both sides. Place the (connected side) in the trench and firmly bury it, Repeat procedure for the "other side" of the tunnel, or half circle you are making, tall enough for room for the peanuts. Bury in the trench and that should work. Dont forget to secure the ends..as well.To see an illustration of the design look up "Quanset Huts", used in WW11 quite a bitfor quick shelter.. If you think it needs to be even more secure, nail the assembled rebarb and screen material to a 2x4"piece of wood, and bury that, to discourage and "halt" trying to dig in. This will last for season after season, and you'll be inside the house, eating peanuts, because the squirels and birds left in a "JIF".(sorry..) If youare feeding them peanuts you have warmly invited them to dine at your place ..whenever. Ofcourse they don't know right from wrong, and they just assume (probably)... they have found the "Main Stash", or Cookie Jar from heaven, when they destroy your efforts.

Does Jimmy C. know about this??

    Good Fortune to you!!

    Del

ps. I just saw that corn was included. A plastic owl, "perched nearby will keep the birds out, fake snakes may work as well, and the good 'ol aluminum pie tins attached to the corn stalks can certainly do no harm.Use panty hose material for the best results.
