Crocodylians are reptiles and share advanced features not seen in amphibians - in particular, they lay shelled eggs on land, not soft eggs in the water.

The closest living relatives of crocodylians are actually birds. Crocs may look more like lizards, but there are specialized structures found in crocs and birds (a four-chambered heart, for example) not seen in lizards. Crocs and birds also share a more recent common ancestor with each other than either does with lizards.
