Oral sex safety questions?

I realize that it is easy to get diseases from performing oral sex because you are ingesting "special" fluids (assuming you are not protecting yourself in some way), but can you get diseases from receiving oral sex? It seems to me that it's no more dangerous than kissing.

Also--and this doesn't really affect me as I am a straight female, but I am just curious--what can you use to protect yourself if you perform oral on a woman?

Additional Details

That's true too; skin-to-skin contact is an issue. But my question is about RECEIVING oral.

Kael, so does that mean it's about as dangerous as kissing someone?

Many respondants have warned about getting herpes from oral sex. I'd like to comment on that a bit.

Yes, you can get oral herpes (HSV1) genitally. In one sense, this is actually less of a risk than kissing someone, since HSV1 is less likely to infect your genitals that it is to infect your genitals. It can, and does, happen, but it is less likely and the symptoms will likely be less severe.

If someone has genitals herpes orally (that is, has HSV2 on their mouth) then they can easily give you genital herpes.

In one sense, genital herpes is no more severe than oral herpes. But in another way it is much worse. When people have genital herpes, it is considered very bad form not to inform your partners about it. And many many people really flip out about "incurable STDs" in a way that they don't flip out about oral herpes. So the stigma can be a real problem. You set yourself up for possible rejection by future lovers in a way that often doesn't happen with oral herpes.

Me, I love recieving oral sex. So I choose not to worry about it. Leading a full and active life results in some risk - you just need to be aware of the possible risks and do as much as you feel is necessary to protect yourself.

This is, by the way, a great question.

I don't think the fluids are the only thing that matter, the skin contact can be what does it too. You might have heard the report that one in three or four girls has an STD, that's pretty serious, not worth taking chances.

for oral sex on a female a person can use a dental damn, which is just a thin sheet of latex--if they can't get one, they could just cut open a condom and cover the area with that.

recieving oral sex isn't safe either. most people have herpes infection in their mouth area (cold sores) and if there is a cold sore that can be transmitted to the genitals. also, chlamydia and gonnorhea can cause oral infections and be transmitted to another person's genitals. if the person performing the oral sex is infected with HIV and has open sores in the mouth that can also be transmitted.

Yes... if someone has herpes sores in their mouth and they perform oral sex on you, you can get genital herpes. I imagine there are other STD's that you can get from oral sex too.

If you are concerned about your partner you can use a dental dam. In a pinch Saran wrap is better than a condom because you don't get the latex taste

I heard from a health professional that if you have cold sores (a type of herpes) and you give oral sex that can turn into the type of herpes that afflicts your genitals.

recieving oral sex is dangerous too. your tounge carry germs and the germs are passed in the gential. because if this person performs oral sex on u, believe me u are not the only one. keep that in mind. you can protect yourself by creating a barrier between you and direct contact by cutting open a condom, or u can simply use plastic wrap.
