Many respondants have warned about getting herpes from oral sex. I'd like to comment on that a bit.
Yes, you can get oral herpes (HSV1) genitally. In one sense, this is actually less of a risk than kissing someone, since HSV1 is less likely to infect your genitals that it is to infect your genitals. It can, and does, happen, but it is less likely and the symptoms will likely be less severe.
If someone has genitals herpes orally (that is, has HSV2 on their mouth) then they can easily give you genital herpes.
In one sense, genital herpes is no more severe than oral herpes. But in another way it is much worse. When people have genital herpes, it is considered very bad form not to inform your partners about it. And many many people really flip out about "incurable STDs" in a way that they don't flip out about oral herpes. So the stigma can be a real problem. You set yourself up for possible rejection by future lovers in a way that often doesn't happen with oral herpes.
Me, I love recieving oral sex. So I choose not to worry about it. Leading a full and active life results in some risk - you just need to be aware of the possible risks and do as much as you feel is necessary to protect yourself.
This is, by the way, a great question.
