Qualifications for Medicaid for my daughter?

Qualifications for Medicaid?
I asked this here b/c no one answered in the finance section. The situation is that my husband has been self-employed for a year and a half. He did really well last year (like his business brought in 6 digits - unfortuanately most of it went out b/c it costs a lot to start a business so we had a lot of overhead). However, he hasn't had any jobs come in since January. He's applied and applied for jobs, but w/ no luck. We filed our taxes today (and have to pay in A LOT- w/ what money I'm not sure) and my question is, even though he made a lot of money last year, could we still qualify for Medicaid for my toddler? What would they base our income on ? Last year's income or just this last quarter's income, which has been almost zilch? I'm a stay at home mom, but do part-time clerical work. I'm definitely looking for a job right now. Just don't want you to think we're sitting around not looking for work & living off the state. Anyone know what it's based on?

OK, I am self employed single mother. DO NOT GIVE YOUR TAX STATEMENTS. Goto your local health department and you can fill out 3 full months of work calendars. They must be 3 full months!!!!! I went through hell just recent over this self-employment crap. Also submit a letter along with your work calendars stating your CURRENT situation. Don't say that you did really good last year or anything like that. Base everything on the past full 3 months ago (Jan, Feb, March) and go from there.

I chose your answer as the best b/c it was the most informative about paperwork, etc. Everyone's answers were very helpful, though. Thanks everyone so much!

Depends on your state. In Illinois, ALL kids who have no medical insurance qualify, regardless of income. If you make a lot of money, you just have to pay money for the coverage and for co-pays and stuff. Where do you live?

I am residing in New York and how it goes is that you do not qualify (your child) for medicaid unless you are making under 400.00 a week. They need the last 4 stubs and you also have to show recent I.D's, bank statements, mortgage payments (if any) SS, Birth Certificate, and you also need proof of address like a postcard mailed to you or a magazine cover. If you exceed over the 400.00 here they deny you but every state is probaly different.
    Good Luck : )

Honey, my husband has a full-time job and my daughter is on Medicaid...without it I would never be able to take my daughter to the doctor when she needs it. She was born premature and has had lots of doctor visits to monitor weight, motor skill development, etc. Without the Medicaid it would've been crippling to our finances. You don't gamble with your kids' health! So no, I don't think you're sitting around living off the state. I think you're doing what's right by your children. (I do however, have a problem with people who own a $300,000 house and a Lexus, and yet have food stamps, Medicaid, WIC, etc. Now THAT is sponging off the government and finding loopholes. Different story.) Anyway, Medicaid for children is called Healthy Kids in New Hampshire, where I live. I'm sure it's the same way where you are--for our application, you have to send in copies of the last four pay stubs from yours and your husband's work. Since he's self-employed, I'm not sure how that works, but if he hasn't had any income in the past few months, I think the aid would be based on your income. They don't do last year's income--you renew/reapply every year, so they base it on whatever you're making now. Good luck. :)

Medicaid probably won't help, but most states have programs for uninsured children that have very generous income guidelines. Check with you local Health Clinic or Dept. of Social Services.

Well where I live, anyone under 21 qualifies unless they are covered on their parents (or their own if over 18) insurance plan from their place of employement (if they are employed). Thats the only way the wouldn't get covered.
