How can I keep roses overnight?

I have bought my mother a bouquet of flowers for her birthday tomorrow. They were in a bucket of water in a cold case when I bought them, and I have placed them on their side in the fridge... should I have placed them in water in a vase instead? Or should I place them in a vase inside the fridge? Will the cold hurt them?

I just want these flowers to look beautiful for her tomorrow! Thanks for helping!

they need water and cool. In that order.

Cut their stems under standing water (like in a bucket of water) and cut on the diagonal. Smash the new cut end of the stem with a hammer and plunge immediately into water. (Ive heard hot water is best, as it travels up the stem faster - which makes sense, but I am always afraid to do it)
Keep them on the floor, on the lowest floor of your house. If you can, put the vase in a fridge, but no cooler than 35º.

Worked perfectly! Thank you so much - my mother loved them and they looked great! (maybe even a little perkier than when I bought them!)
