If the bride and groom pay for their wedding, who welcomes the guests?

I'm paying for my wedding, but I was wondering - should my father make the first speech welcoming the guests? I kind of want to do that since my dad is my guest too. Would that be inappropriate?

Why not, the guests dont know who is paying for the wedding do they? im sure its expected that your dad make a speech.

I thought it was the Bride and Groom who welcome everyone, and thank them for coming, afterall it is your wedding they came to right? Thats what we will be doing.

The bride and groom always welcome the guests. The only time who pays really comes into play is when you are wording the invitations.

Even if your dad was paying guests would find it very rude if you didn't welcome them and thank them for coming.

Why not as a couple welcome your guests and thank them for sharing the special moment with them.

my cousin's father welcomed everyone to her first wedding
and ended up saying he thought she was too young to get married. (at 23) She's been divorced twice, go figure. Do it yourself

if your the shy type, get your groom to say most of it...

you can do what you want, it's your wedding! If you feel that since you and your new hubby are paying, you should give the speech, then do it!

Guests neither know nor care who's paying for the wedding. We're paying for ours. Our officiant is welcoming everyone to the ceremony, and then the DJ will welcome everyone as he starts the introductions. The BM and MoH are giving toasts at the reception, too.
