Scented Rose is right, just plan ahead a little and take reusable bags. There are a wide variety available from linen ones that easily fit in your pocket to the big supermarket type ones.

As usual I am afraid that you have attracted the attention of the "anti-environmentalist" who can't resist trying to have a dig at people who actually have a concern for the world in which we live. Also as usual their logic is flawed! Stores switched to plastic bags because they have a lower unit cost
and thus boosted their bottom line profits - not because anyone complained about cutting down trees. Also paper bags, many of which are manufactured from recycled paper and card or from sustainable forests are considerably better for the environment and the majority of open-minded people see that as a better alternative to plastic.

I wouldn't ask here, this could get ugly.
But if you want it so badly, just do it yourself, and maybe one day, it'll catch on.

Plastic bags were banned here in Ireland a long time ago and we use paper bags for all our shopping and reusable bags for the heavier groceries ,I would not pay for a plastic bag so we bring our own to the shops ,to see them disgusting bags flying up on trees and such like is gone forever ,the down side of the paper bags is when it rains but it makes you think in advance and be prepared, so the smoking ban and the plastic bags is one of the best pieces of legislation ever brought in by a goverment ,to see the smokers having to leave the warmth of inside to go outside for a cigarette and the non smokers can breathe in peace , great stuff.
