Chihuahua puppy humping.?

Question

My supposedly 8 week old male chihuahua is trying to hump my 3 year old male Lab. What do I do to stop this? Is this usual for a young puppy to start so soon? I've never seen such a thing. My Lab really only done it once when he was 2 years old. So it's hard for me to understand why this little dog is doing this? When can I get my puppy neutered? Please help...And what do I tell my kids in case they see him doing this?

At 8 weeks old, he's playing and trying out behaviours, just like a small child. It's not unusual, it's not sexually related and it's highly unlikely that he's displaying dominant behaviour, as the first dominance stage should not appear until he's about 13 weeks old - the puppy license seem to expire right about that time as well, so you if your puppy is still humping by then, you will probably see that your male Lab will no longer allow him to do it.

I agree that it's not that nice to look at, so I would suggest that you distract/stop him every time he starts humping and he should grow out of it.

I'm not sure what you should tell your kids. I guess it all depends on how old they are. I would personally just say it the way it is. That humping is a bossy behaviour and that your puppy is playing boss.

As for when you can get him neutered, ask your vet what he/she recommends. Just don't expect that neutering will be an automatic fix for humping and other unwanted behaviours - the dog needs to be trained as well.

chihuahuas are horny dogs... you can nueter him but it may not do a thing.. I have 3 female chihuahuas and they are spade and try to hump everything... including the cats outside... its in their genes... sorry... call the vet

It's a dominance thing, not a sexual urge. Dogs are weird that way! I just dogsat for a Lab that liked humping the cat when I wasn't paying attention.

Some dogs are like that. Sometimes even fixed dogs behave like that.

Just tell the kids the truth, that it's "mating behavior" and leave it at that. Farm kids see that sort of thing all the time when raising livestock. It doesn't hurt anything.

Even after you neuter more then likely he will still do it!! He is showing dominance towards your lab.. Tell your kids they are just playing or your pup is trying to jump on the labs back.. My dog is fixed and he still humps the cat and our other dog..

Its funny because my dog does the same thing, when you neuter your dog he may stop, more or less he might. You can get them neutered at 4 or 5 months.

-- Oh and about the kids, tell them they are dancing or hugging. My brothers thought they were wrestling then dancing =] Kids will believe anything.

It's quite normal for puppies to hump, male or female. They aren't having "urges" and they aren't displaying dominance. They've merely figured out a new way to interact with their environment and are testing it out. I've yet to meet a chihuahua that didn't do this. My male did, my female did, my parents female did, their male still does on occassion. Get him neutered no earlier than 6-9 months, and by the way, if he's already figured out how, neutering him won't necessarily stop this behavior. Good training, however, will. When he goes to hump whatever, tell him No!, and remove him from whatever he has wrapped his little legs around. Then redirect his attention to something that pleases you for him to do, and praise him for doing so.

As to your kids... Tell them he's playing, as that's what he's doing.

This has nothing to do with a sexual urgy. This dog is attempting to show dominance over the lab. Of course get your puppy neutered. call you vet but I believe they do this at 4-5 mo. old. Also when this happens then you need to stop the behavior and establish YOUR dominance over both of the dogs.

When the chihuahua humps the lab, Loudly say NO and then grab the chihuahua and flip him over onto his back so that his stomach is exposed. This tells the dog in dog language that you are the boss and what you say goes. You will need to do this A LOT in order to lessen this behavior but I don't think you can stop it completely. Hopefully soon, just by you saying NO, the dog will stop instead of having to flip him over.

Also, if the lab has a problem, some dogs will let the other dog know that it is not acceptable. I would tell you to let that happen but with the large size difference I would advice against that.

I have two chihuahua's. One male and one female. At 10 weeks my female was humping my pillows and then went from the pillows to humping her bed and then started humping the male. Then my male who was a little younger started doing the same thing. It must be a chihuahua thing. I was shocked by the whole thing because my mother's dog (who is a lab/poodle mix) didn't start humping until he was about a 1 year old!

lmao my chihuahua humped my boxer//bulldog. im not sure if there is anything to do for this, i tried teaching my dog not to do it but it didnt help. i dont think u can get them neutered until they are about 4 months tho...im not too sure tho. just tell ur kids that he is playing or something.. just make sure ur dog doesnt try humping the kids cuz my dog sometimes comes up to me an tries humping my arm :-/

Yes, this probably is dominance. It concerns me that such a young pup would be trying to dominate an adult male dog. How does the Lab respond? If he obviously doesn't like it but is afraid to correct the pup, you should remove the pup yourself and tell him firmly to knock it off. If he continues, put him in a time out for about 30 seconds. If the Lab couldn't care less, I'm inclined to let the pup keep doing it. Ideally, the dogs should determine who will be the dominant one and in what situations. Regardless, be prepared for some struggles when the Chihuahua reaches adolescence (about five months) as that is when dogs tend to push things.

You can get him neutered now. The sooner, the better. It won't stop what he's doing but it may prevent it from getting worse.

Yell at your dog when he tries to hump the Lab. Then separate the two until he calms down.

You need to neuter them, it will stop most of the horniness. "Many humane shelters and veterinarians are starting to neuter male animals at a younger age, even 6-14 weeks of age. This early neutering does not affect the growth rate, and there are no appreciable differences in skeletal, physical, or behavioral development between those animals neutered early than those neutered at a more traditional age."

Tell them that the chihuahua is trying to jump over the lab, but can't make it. Or tell them that the dogs are playing (this might result in the kids humping each other, so beware)

My Chihuahua does that too! But she's a female and after she stops doing her humping, she starts throwing the doll around and growling at it. But I heard that it's not because of anything sexual, but more of a dominance thing.
