How do you measure R-value?

I want to build a structure out of alternative materials (read: garbage)... and I haven't found much literature on the insulative properties of such things as concrete (my binding material of choice), plastic and glass bottles, boiled paper products, etc. So how do I measure R vale for myself? Thanks.

R value is the reciprocal of U. U = Btu/ft²·°F·h at a standard temp. of 24 deg. C @ 50% humidity and no wind. I'ld do something along the lines of having a container of -whatever- filled with water at 24 deg. C and measure the air temp. around it and then over a length of time measure the change in the water temp. and figure out how many Btu's were gained or lost by the water.

I wish I understood this better... but I will do this experiment. Thanks.
