No, prostitution isn't an automatic killer in NY politics. It's bad, but I think it depends on what exactly happened. I doubt it will be worse than Pataki's pay to play scandle, but we'll find out soon because his press conference is about to start.
Tinker, if he were still the AG, my answer would be different. There are different things that an AG and a governer should resign over.
Edit: Well that was anticlimactic. Spitzer gave a blanket appology to his family and to the public, but didn't say what he did. I liked the politics is about ideas, not individuals stuff, and I agree, and if the individual can still get the ideas accomplished, then I don't think he can resign. I can't evaluate that yet because he didn't say what he did, and that disappoints me.
Edit: So apparently he paid for a high priced hooker across state lines. As long as he paid for it himself, he should be prosecuted the same as every other John. I don't know the typical federal penalties. In New York State, you pay a fine and go to John school where you learn in graphic detail about the horrors of prostitution. I hear its quite disgusting and effective. Former prostitutes come and talk about how some girls hide razor blades in their mouths and how virtually all of them are abused and addicts. Johns also discuss the various horrible things that have happened to them, like diseases and such. It's probably a little different in high priced rings like this, but I'm not sure how different. The principle is, of course, the same and it is just as illegal.
If he used government funds or something (there's currently no allegation of that and he has plenty of his own money), then it would be a different story. Also, if he were still AG and charged directly with prosecuting such prostitution rings, it would also be a different story. It is notable that he did prosecute prostitution rings when he was AG, so that's pretty bad for him.
