How Long did it take you to become fluent in Spanish?

Hi there! yo estoy determinada a aprender espanol! I want to be fluent so bad. What steps did you take to learn the language & how long did take to be fluent? I do plan to go spend some time in another country for about 2-3 months. Has anyone done this?Thanks for your help.

It depends a lot on how much opportunity you have to use it conversationally.

You can make agreements with other students in your class to only speak Spanish when you see each other out of class. That will help if you don't have anyone else to practice with.

The most important thing is to learn how to THINK in Spanish. Also, you will be greatly surprised at the differences you find conversationally between what you learn in school and what is spoken in Mexico.

i dont really know. My parents are from Guatemala so i guess spanish is my first language.

You could go to a different country but Los Angeles has a lot of places where you can talk to the waiter, worker etc. in spanish.

i think i can be fluent in spanish but i just need confidence

It really depends. I'm not fluent, but I've been practicing for a long time, and this summer I'm going to Mexico for eight weeks. It would be easier if you just immersed yourself in the language. One of my cousins moved to Nicaragua by herself, found a job, and (at first) with just a translator and Spanish book became fluent in about two months.

The best way is to surround youself with native speakers. It can be alot of help.
I can't really say how long it took me since I am a native speaker.

Si. I met a Puerto Rican friend. As I taught him english, he taught me spanish. I was fluent in a couple of weeks.

spanish is one of the hardest languages to learn, since it has have so many verbal tenses. to give you an idea there's only 6 verbal tenses in english and 14 in spanish.
i am fluent because i was born iin south america, but let me tell you if you really want to learn it and you have a hispanic friend who can help you practice it on a daily basis it wont take too long in about 2 years you'll be fluent

i think that's the best way, visiting another country... i want to learn english, I'm mexican and I want to travel just to learn english...

I'm not fluent but I am conversational. I studied two years at a community college and had an additional year speaking with a co-worker who didn't speak English. I don't know if you can become fluent in another country in two or three months. Some people can spend years in another country without learning the language. However, you are very motivated so you will do well!

Estoy aprendiendo tambien...

I've been studying for close to two years....I'm passable in conversation but I wouldn't exactly consider myself fluent. I read in Spanish, listen to music, watch TV. I don't understand everything but it's definitely helping. I'm going to South America this summer for a vacation for a few weeks, and I plan to do an exchange program later on. I'd also love to be fluent!
