How would you respond to a hand-knit gift?

If someone knit you a gift- a scarf, hat, sweater, what have you... using high quality wool yarn, would you really appreciate it? Is it worth a knitter's time and money to knit something for someone who doesn't know how much work or expense went into it? As a knitter- should I bother knitting gifts for people, or will they not appreciate them or care enough to wash them properly? Should I just knit for myself and my immediate family, or do you think people really truly appreciate quality handmade items?

I'm a knitter, too, so I completely understand why you posted this question. I've learned only to knit things for people who will really appreciate the time, effort, and money that went into these gifts. Only a knitter can truly appreciate a gift that someone else knitted!

Great answers, everyone. I knit for all my family every Christmas and I don't feel like my effort is appreciated. I think I'll just abstain this year, and if anyone complains I'll know that they appreciated my hand-knits.

I like it when my aunt knits me stuff :)
But then again im only 16. I'd say that it's better to stick to family for hand knit items. if i got it from a friend, id feel confused.

I'm a crochet person, and when I hear a baby is to be born or a marriage is to take place, I start crocheting.

The people who receive my gifts truly appreciate them, not just because they are beautiful, but because I thought about them fondly the whole time I was making the gift.

My daughter (22) first learned to knit 4 years ago, and she knit each of her buddies (5-6 people) a long, long scarf (those were in fashion) for December. They absolutely loved them. Each was a different color, or a different texture, but each was knit with love.

it's certainly worth more than any gift purchased in the store! they make good donations to organizations that need clothing for babies, children, and elders!

If you're really unsure - ask! I personally love recieving handmade items as I know a lot of work and love went into them. Though I know some people may not appreciate them in the same way. Just ask them if it's something they would like and if they seem iffy then don't make anything for them. Knit for those who you know will truly appreciate the time and effort that went into making such a thoughtful gift.

I would love that!! It takes so much more care, thought and effort to make something like that than to just buy it. Also, the quality is better than some mass-produced item made from inferior yarn (or worse, some synthetic material), and it's one-of-a-kind. I have cherished those things that were made for me. At least in my adult life. When I was a child, I let a handmade gift get away from me and I have never stopped regretting it.

There is a difference between appreciating it, and actually feeling like you are going to use it. I wear hats and gloves in the wintertime, but I am picky about color. I know my husband is picky about hats being too tight, or if they are the kind you have to roll up. In general, if someone gave me a knitted gift, there's no guarantee that I will actually use it because there is a really good chance that I won't like something about it. So it's not about appreciating the time and expense you went through, but it's moreso about not wanting to wear something I do not like just to make someone happy.

It depends on the person. I would definitely appreciate a knitted item. Especially a new blanket...they are the warmest!

I would appreciate it because you made it yourself. I like knit things. Some people will appreciate it and some won't.
