Where did the phrase "Extra! Extra! Read all about it!" come from?

Yes, everybody knows that newsboys yelled that out years ago, but why?!? What does it really mean?

in the old days whenever there was breaking important news and the normal daily had already been delivered, they would sometimes print a 2nd paper delivered later in the day with the urgent news. An 'EXTRA' edition.

In the old days when someone was selling newspapers, they would yell that out so people would buy the paper.

Newspapers used to have morning and evening editions. The evening edition, with the morning's news, would be the "Extra". The vendors yelled that so people on their way home would buy the paper for the latest news.

When newspapers were sold on street corners by paper boys a big news event would warrant a special edition so the paper boys would hawk the special edition by shouting "Extra! Extra! Read all about it!" to sell more papers and to get the news out.
