Where did the phrase "Extra! Extra! Read all about it!" come from?

Yes, everybody knows that newsboys yelled that out years ago, but why?!? What does it really mean?

in the old days whenever there was breaking important news and the normal daily had already been delivered, they would sometimes print a 2nd paper delivered later in the day with the urgent news. An 'EXTRA' edition.
