Michelle Obama says her husband will "fix our souls" if elected president. Is this the job of the President?

...I thought the left wanted a separation of religion and state.

Here is an exerpt from her speech at UCLA:

"We have lost the understanding that in a democracy, we have a mutual obligation to one another -- that we cannot measure the greatness of our society by the strongest and richest of us, but we have to measure our greatness by the least of these. That we have to compromise and sacrifice for one another in order to get things done. That is why I am here, because Barack Obama is the only person in this who understands that. That before we can work on the problems, we have to fix our souls. Our souls are broken in this nation."

Additional Details

Love Child, while it's easy to feel good about the speeches, I'm afraid you are not looking at the deeper meaning of the words.

Government is nothing more than a force-wielding institution. Government accomplishes nothing, not even the most benign program, without the point of a gun, whether it is democratically elected or not. (If you don't believe me, try opting out of Social Security and see what happens.) Obama wants to control where our government guns will point for the next 8 years. And he also says he wants you and me to "sacrifice" more. So it follows that he intends to use those government guns to force us to "sacrifice" more.

Muggers do the same thing. I don't see anything "touching" about it.

Chris J: "People forget that the first responsibility of the government is to leave us alone."--couldn't have said it better.

Paris W., thanks for your answer. Strongly agree with your No. 1, not sure I agree with your No. 2.

The quote was "...Barack Obama is the only person in this who understands that...before we can work on the problems, we have to fix our souls." Presumably this means he is the only one who considers fixing our souls a priority, meaning the government has to do it.

I may also be wrong, but that is how I read it the first time. Thanks for your answer.

If I want my soul "fixed', I'll talk with my Paster about it.

I don't want or need a president to "fix my soul".

I want a president who will go after the bad guys who want to hurt me or my children.

I want a president who will stand up to groups like the UN, or other corrupt organizations and spit in their eye!

I want a President who says what he means and means what he says.

Take care of the countries security, make sure our borders are secure, and then leave me alone!!
