The diathesis-stress model is a way of explaining how people end up suffering from mental disorders by assuming that mental disorders come from the interaction of two things, genetic and life experience (nature and nurture).

Using your example of OCD, two people are born with a genetic predisposition for OCD.

One of them has a normal upbringing and life, so despite this genetic predisposition, never actually develops it.

The other however may suffer some event that combined with the OCD genetic trait pushes them 'over the edge' and they end up with OCD.
