Believe me- VISTA sucks! Its a bloated OS that will slow down your computer to a crawl unless you give Gigabytes (plural, you want at least 2 GB) of RAM and a Dual Core AMD processor. Don't get jealous of "Aero glass interface" or the "sidebar." XP is great OS, very stable and it won't whine that it wants more muscle. Also Vista throws fits on software made before 2007 and hardware made before 2003 while XP will welcome hardware as early as 1998 and software from 2001. So unless you really want Aero and have a very powerful system- get XP. Also, it partly microsofts fault for this- I would not expect people to love an OS in and out if they have been using the same OS for 5 years straight.
By the way- Microsoft is giving up on Vista
They will be giving out free upgrades to the next version of windows, windows 7, for anyone who has Vista (that's ONE good reason to get it)

I'll jot down the major stuff.
Vista is less stable than xp (not by much, xp isn't really stable either)
Vista needs more power (2 gigs of ram and a dual core processor minimum)
Vista has new features like windows aero and others that you never really notice but are there
    Vista has directx10
The main point here is vista is less stable and takes more power but has more to offer, if your computer is good or you have a directx 10 videocard then get vista, its like having a fast and dangerous car, are you willing to risk a little stability for something this awesome?
Frankly it doesn't matter which is better, xp is discontinued and like it or not everyone will eventually switch to vista, you might as well get it done sooner rather than later.

If you are a new bee to the computer world it is okay

But if you have been around computers a while you will notice the slow machine effect.

With hardware specs that would blow away windows xp in what it needs to work

A TON of money in sleeping pills worring if it will work when you boot up tomorrow.

The ton of old game, and finical, and photo and word printing, programs on CD's that don't work any more.

Because Microsoft says you have to use only what they approve of and they are EXPENSIVE to buy

The short life of the computer you now have because of its heat out put on all hardware inside.

The over inflated price of any new hardware you get for it

Regardless of what people may say, if you have a computer with a decent video card (NOT INTEGRATED unless on a laptop), 2+ GB's of RAM, you'll be fine with vista. I have an old AMD Athlon 64 3400+, 3GB RAM, and a Radeon X850 XT PE in my system, and vista hasn't given me a single hiccup. I've been beta testing it since August 2006, and absolutely love it. If you bought a cheap $400 system, you'll hate it. Vista is MUCH more stable than XP. Another complaint is drivers, but I've had zero issues except with my piece of garbage TV Tuner card. But that's my fault, I bought a cheap card that was built by a horrible company.

XP is over 7 years old. It's time to let it die if you are buying a new pc. Also, if you use a corporate VPN, check the compatibility. User Access Control (UAC) will be annoying at first, but it will save your *** in the end when a virus wants to run and UAC says no. So if you are buying a new PC, don't fear the Vista.

If you already own an XP machine, use the Vista experience wizard. If it is below a 4.0, don't upgrade.

This Microsoft bashing stuff is getting really old. Not only is Vista better, it's faster, has a better user interface and allows for the latest technologies in graphics rendering. Get used to the fact that Vista is going nowhere, it's here to stay. And it's about time. Yes, Vista attempts to address modern issues with previous orientating systems, and has VERY FEW bugs. But it's and entirely new operating system, and is bound to have a settling in period. Those that have the most trouble with Vista are those that do not research what it means to run Vista on a modern computer. Since Vista attempts to address new technologies in graphics and display, you will need a powerful system to run Vista. If you have XP on your current computer, keep it. It's not likely it will run Vista. Your next computer will have Vista installed.

Eventually it may be better than XP but they're still working hard at getting out the kinks.

Yes... but its not a matter of belief. Vista IS better, its not even really debateable.

Does it require more hardware, yes. Is it significantly different from XP, yes. Are their some features which operate more slowly under Vista than under XP, yes.

However, anyone who has been around computers long enough to remember the transition from DOS, to Win 3.11, to Win NT, to Win 95, Win 98, Win ME, Win 2000, Win XP... etc. understands that not all OS releases are simple little revisions like Win98 or, in this case Vista.

Do you think that all DOS users immediately fell in love with 3.11 for Workgroups? No, they didnt. Or that everyone immediately accepted WinNT & '95 with their slick (for the time) interfaces, hell no they didnt.

People get accustomed to what they use and, unless they're IT types that can just adapt to different OS's... the type that are already used to working in multiple environments.. they're not going to take kindly to change.

I am the IT director for a multi-national corporation and, to whomever the dumbass was that claims Vista is less stable, VISTA IS EASILY 100% MORE STABLE THAN XP.

I manage nearly two hundred systems between desktops and servers, of which twenty three are Vista. While the setup of those systems does take about %30-%50 more time to complete in some cases, once installed I spend less time managing that group of desktops than any other group as a whole. Hell, we have two XP laptops from Sony that give me more grief on then the twenty three Vista machines combined.

Bottom Line: If you buy the hardware to run it, Vista will not let you down. If you try to get by on the cheap, you'll feel it. With Vista, you get what you pay for and the machine has to be built to handle it.
