If I don't have a slow cooker?

Question

Is there any way I can make a recipe that is supposed to be made in a slow cooker, if I don't have one? Can I just cook it on the stove top at a low heat?

depends on the recepie, if it is a soup like recepie one with a good water base, then on the stove on low heat, that is how I cook all of my stews, but if it is like bbq chicken or acrockpot lasagna, then that is best in the stove on lower heat around 250-300

It would be better to put in a casserole dish and cook on a very low heat in the oven.

You sure can. If you are talking about a roast, I cook mine in a roasting pan on the stove with the carrots and potatoes and lipton onion soup mix and it is super delicious. Just keep the stove on low and let it do it's thing. Just be sure to check the temp and turn the heat off a few degrees before it is done because it will continue to cook on its own. I learned the hard way. Good luck!!

Beans, stews and pot roast could all be cooked on the stove. Another alternative is to use the oven, set on low.

Either use a casserole dish in a low oven, or a pan on the cooker top on a low heat, in both cases with a well fitting lid.

Keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't boil dry, or over.

I think whichever method you choose, start of with a high heat, then adjust to keep it just below simmering point.

Sure you can cook it on the stove top. Make sure that the pan is large enough so that it's not over crowded. I use a heavy 6 qt. sauce pan. Place your recipe in the pan and just enough liquid, about 1/2 to 3/4 cup so it won't burn. Cover and simmer on very low heat checking occasionally to see if you need to add some more liquid.
