They asked to bring lobster for them from Maine.

The reason why you need to use subjuntive with the verb "traer" is that the first clause, that is, "(Ellos) Me pidieron" requires that if there is a dependent clause with a different subject, the subjuntive be used.

There are two different subjects: they and I. "Ellos me pidieron que yo les trajera unas langostas" and the first verb is a verb of influence (somebody wants someone else to do something).

In this case you need to use the IMPERFECT SUBJUNTIVE because of the tense sequence. The first verb is in the preterite, therefore in the past and the second verb has to be in the past too.
