What did YOU GIVE UP for lent?

I do not practice Lent. However, I am reading up on Catholicism and the practice of Lent. There is a good book by Pope Benedict titled 'Journey to Easter: Spiritual Reflections for the Lenton Season'.

You need to be careful, though. Lent is about making a personal sacrifice to glorify our Lord. Instead of making it personal, people tend to make it very public, letting everyone know what they are giving up for Lent, which goes against what Christ taught:

"Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven."

I've never observed Lent this way.
God says that it's not our sacrifices or offerings He wants but our hearts.
It's easy to give up a treat or something....but what about your heart? Have you given away something to someone in need?

Nothing. While I can see the Merritt of it I place lent up there with the Kosher Jews that heap extra laws or restrictions upon themselves thinking that the exclusion of certain things will make them more Holy.

I do not say the above to make those of you who fall into this category upset. It is merely my view on the subject. I have worse views about New Year's resolutions.

I have enough on my plate with out depriving myself of something. That is I am working on anger, desires,and my overly sharp tongue. I am focusing on my prayer life and putting more effort into my Bible reading.

Now, if you are seeking God's direction or intervention in your life do not wait for Lent start a fast. If it is dire ask friends to join you and you could even go so far as the "Esther" fast (no food or liquid for three days).
