Too cold to bring my chihuahua for walk ?!!?

its winter. its cold. with snow and salt on the ground. seeing them with their paws on the cold pavement seems a bit....

our dog is perfectly potty-trained and he seems happy in his own space...

I have a 7 month old daschund/corgi mix and he gets COLD!!!
He has his own medium size wicker basket full of shirts and 2 winter coats. He loves to go to the basket every morning to get dressed. I buy his clothes at Walmart and Target because they are generally cheaper than Pet-co or Petsmart. Be sure to fold his shirt and/or coat up a little before taking him out so he doesn't piddle on it...you don't want to be changing his clothes every time he comes in. I only dress my dog in sweaters on really cold days because they tend to stretch out quickly. Most days he wears tshirts or hoodie sweatshirts. I used to think people who dressed their dogs were silly until I got this one. He really does get cold and I have read that that is quite common with the smaller breeds. If you are cold you put a jacket on, it your young child were cold you would put warm clothes on him or her so, by all means if your pooch is cold put a shirt and/or jacket on him. He will be happy and healthy. It wont take long for you to figure out which clothes he likes and dislikes, just like people, some clothes are more comfortable than others. Maybe buy him a coat and some dog booties, which will probably keep him warm if you want to talk him on walks.

Why don't you buy him some booties, I have some for my little Yorkie, he loves them he can stay out longer and have fun without freezing his little paws.

then don't - he's a small dog - you rather keep him warm than risk him getting sick - there are always booties that you can buy for him tho if you don't want to his paws on the cold pavement.

then why take him for a walk? I think it would be too cold for him. and congrats on potty training a chihuahua, we have 8 that constantly mark territory after each other so it's pretty hard, only 2 are potty trained the rest are ignorant.

You should still take him/her for a walk. Chihuahuas can gain weight easily. And one extra pound for a dog (especially a small one) is like twenty pounds on a human.

Their paws can take the cold, but the salt can be a problem. Usually though if it's okay for you then it's probably okay for your dog.

it is cold, yes, but doggies need their exercise! even little dogs in the winter need to be walked, at least around the block a few times. get him or her a little sweater to wear so she doesnt get cold, and make sure you wash her paw pads off when she comes in for a walk if there's salt on the ground, because salt can irritate their sensitive little pads.

but take her out! at least try it. if she doesnt want to be out in the cold she will let you know and head for home as soon as she's unhappy =]

I have a seven month chihuahua, who weighs 4 pounds, and to keep her warm, we bought cute fluffy socks and cut of the toes and made arm holes for her to use as a sweater. Much cheaper that designer clothes, and a much better fit. She has been out running in the cold on her walks wearing two sweaters and she is loving it.

I never take my Chihuahua for a walk. We just run around the house. I think that if he can start panting inside the house, there is no need to take him on a walk. In fact, the couple of times I have taken him on walks, he just craps out and lays down and won't get up. If you have to take him outside try a sweater. Sometimes I will put a sweater on him before he goes to pee, but he still comes in shaking from the cold.

I have three dogs. Two are longer haired and one is an APBT with short hair. The short haired one shivers when it is cold, and I am not even talking freezing! So when it gets "cold" where I live, she wears a sweater and is fine then. She wouldn't want a long walk though. The other two are fine with "cold" weather.

buy him a doggie coat/blanket and those cute little doggie booties - and, if he doesn't want 2 go out, he will let u know - our min-pin sure does!!! good luck; i luv pets - the rat, 2 cats, one cockatiel, min pin, two turtles and one goldfish, also a green terror (whatever that is)!!??

Make sure that it is not too hot or too cold when you walk a dog of that size.
