The term has metamorphosed into a caricature and stereotype of such women: a "ditzy" or "airhead" personality, and unapologetically "spoiled" behaviour that showed more interest in shopping, personal appearance, and social status, rather than in intellectual development or personal accomplishment.

It came from a movie "Valley Girl" referring to the girls location of residence. The San Fernando Valley of Southern California. There is some upper middle class "YUPPIE" types that were know to have their own slang way of taking and had privileged lives.
The movie was how this girl fell for a guy that was not as well off and did not live in the Valley.
The San Fernando Valley is where I live but I do not live in like Beverly Hills. And I was already an adult when that movie came out. "Gag me with a spoon" was one expression used.
