That is a pretty complicated question. I highly recommend that you checkout the book "No god but God" by Reza Aslan. It gives a very comprehensive description of the origins, different beliefs and practices, and current conflicts within the Islamic faith.

Incidentally, I saw the guy on Colbert Report and the Daily Show and was impressed by him and thus went out and bought his book. You should too :) Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/No-god-but-God-Evolution/dp/0812971892/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1201674290&sr=8-1

Islam is a religion where Muslims (terrorists excluded..they're not Muslims) believe it's the way of life. We are to have love for God and His creations, we are to be dutiful, humble, pious in our manners, behaviors, attitudes, and we are to display high standard of morality at all times for others to emulate. We are to believe this earthly life is a test, and remain steadfast during times of hardships, do good deeds, have good relationship with God and our parents, thus preparing us for the life in the hereafter to enter paradise. Islam is a beautiful religion, where those who follow, are rightfully guided in this world as in the hereafter.

Practices: Obligatory daily prayers (5 times), fasting during Ramadan, pilgrimage to Mecca, charity, read the Quran.

The basic practices of Islam are Oppression,Hatred and Death. I don't go by what they say,I go by what they do. Everywhere on Earth where Islam reigns is oppressive and violent, because Islam as an ideology is oppressive and violent.

Most of the other Muslim in R&S is busy with their du'a to support the 1.2 billion Muslim effort to release Muhammad from Jahannam HELL in their 5 times a day salat to the Moonrock Dzat Allah.

    Currently they are saying outloud:
Allahumma rabba hazihi ad-da`wah at-tammah wa as-salati al-qa’imah, ati Muhammadan al-wasilah wa al-fadhilah wab`athhu maqaman mahmudan allzi wa`adtah (Sahih Bukhari)

    Please be patient.
