Why are nuns called 'BRIDES of Christ'?

MAKEMEAS - thanks, I didn't realise that nuns actually take a wedding ring? Do they wear it at all times?

when you come to think of it, it sure sounds funny, since there was a pagan Roman goddess, Vesta, who had an entourage of virgins that served her, and they were also forbidden to have sex, so you expect nuns to be called "virgins of Jesus" rather than "brides".
Maybe the connotations, among early Christians, made them avoid the title "virgins"
