Why are nuns called 'BRIDES of Christ'?
Additional Details
MAKEMEAS - thanks, I didn't realise that nuns actually take a wedding ring? Do they wear it at all times?

when you come to think of it, it sure sounds funny, since there was a pagan Roman goddess, Vesta, who had an entourage of virgins that served her, and they were also forbidden to have sex, so you expect nuns to be called "virgins of Jesus" rather than "brides".
Maybe the connotations, among early Christians, made them avoid the title "virgins"

Actually we all are in that the church is the bride of Christ. We are the resepticle of the life that God gave us.
But Nuns take a vow of chastity to remain pure for God. That is why they take a wedding ring when they make their vows. It is a covenant with God.

Because they "marry" Jesus.

Because they devote their lives to following Christ and therefore never marry.

Anyone Spiritually speaking who is in Christ is His bride, not too sure where the nuns are standing with God?

Because they take a vow to spend their lives working for Jesus Christ and God's kingdom. It's a metaphor, for their being faithful to Christ and giving him their full allegiance.

Actually the church body is called the "bride" of christ. It has nothing to do with marrige or Jesus being a sicko. Read your bible once in a while and you'll eventually figure it out.

I think they actually take vows to God in their final vow ceremony as a nun.I saw it in a movie. They wore a white gown w/ veil and everything. They receive a plain gold band. Its a symbol they have been joined spiritually completely to Jesus in this life. They are really considered the brides of Christ. They are dedicated to him only w/ their life. That's a bad,non-catholic,but well-intentioned explanation of what I saw.

Because they swear themselves to Christ only to be in an exclusive relationship with him. Having a man would make the woman more worldly an less spiritually in tune.

Because the only husband they'll ever have, supposedely, is long past where Viagra would help.
Properly spelled, it should be "None," cause that's what they're gettin' - and people wonder why so many of them are mean!

That's a good question, I don't know though I guess for the same reason they call the priest Father.
The only Nun I know of is a man, Father of Moses’ successor Joshua; son of Elishama of the tribe of Ephraim.—Ex 33:11; Jos 1:1; 1Ch 7:20, 26, 27,
And I didn't know they recieved a ring, that doesn't make sense, since God whom their Suppose to be married to doesn't. Come to think of it, God is the only one that suppose to be called Father. So maybe their married to him.

It does sound kinda creepy and all to me too. My husband has a fear of nuns like some people fear clowns. He went to a Catholic school where the nuns were physically violent and mentally cruel. He needed glasses, but didn't find it out till later. So, he had problems reading. The nuns would call him stupid and hit him. Married to Christ, sounds more like bridezillas!

Because at the day of their ordination, the ceremony is simulated to a marriage union, including the ring the Nuns take to wear for life or until they find someone who can offer them a more exciting life.

I have never heard that before ...But I do know the bride of Christ in the bible is the body of Christ...which are Christians...or the church...Revelations 21: 9. And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife.It is the finished product of the church joined with him in heaven

Within a mans controlled world which was setup by the Christians who wanted brides of Christ for whom they may have pleasure within the confines of the holy sacraments laid down by Constantine the Great who issued the decree to the Bishops under his direct control in the restructuring of the church that became Roman Catholic.

Because as they generally (in times gone by), joined the convent because they couldn't find a suitable husband, they had a wedding ceremony, and this was their marriage...they almost always brought a dowry as well. There's a convent in Madrid that is MASSIVELY wealthy because it was where the princesses often wound up, and the kings would give HUGE dowries of art and valuables when they "married" the church.

The Christian church is the bride of Christ as spoken of in the Holy bible (The Word of God) - the Christian church, meaning all who have received salvation through Yeshua THE Messiah...
Revelation 22v17 "The Spirit and the bride say "come" and let the one who hears say "come" and let the one who is thirsty say "come" let the one who wishes take the water of life without cost" "the water of life is Jesus Christ, The Messiah"
Rev 21v2 - " And i saw the Holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband...
Blessings to you

why....... as nuns they give their body and soul to just one and as marriage is a sacred vow they marry Christ symbolically and be faith full to him for ever ..and get ring to symbolise this truce
