Do you think the cutesy term the media uses "baby bump" encourages teenage pregnancy?

I think the media glamorizes pregnancy with this cutesy term. They splash pictures of unmarried pregnant celebrities all over magazine covers and news articles displaying their cute "baby bump". I think it makes their pregnancy seem like a cute accessory. Where are all of the articles about the CARE of the little ones. Wasn't Britney cute with her "baby bumps"? Now look at those poor children. No wonder teenage pregnancy is on the rise.

Additional Details

I guess I should stop taking my children to the grocery store or the drug store because of the magazine covers blaring "baby bumps" No one blamed the media...I feel it encourages it though. It's the new fashion accessory.

Teenage pregnancy is on the rise because the media glamorizes sex in general, and parents are too lazy to care.

I see what you mean about the "cutesy" terms though. The media does make it seem like everything is fine and dandy. Look at the movie, Juno...

Asker's Comment:
You are right. It is a combination of poor parental guidance and the influence of the media as well as movies. Pregnancy and sex is being glamorized and as parents, we should be ever vigilant. Thank you all for your answers.

thats good, I never thought about it that way. I agree though. BUT Jamie Spears ISNT the 1st 16 year old to get pregnant. and the media shouldnt even talk about teens who are pregnant. and who wants to turn out like britney? the girl is effing crazy and got her kids taken away

I don't think the term "baby bump" is the cause for teen pregnancy. I think that the lack of morals and teenagers thinking that sex is a game to be messed with...oh yeah and the whole fact that *if* something happens they can have an abortion without mom & dad knowing about it.

I also think that the whole child development classes that give tweens & teens computerized babies for 3 days makes them think that's it's really that easy. Shoot my sister just did this two months ago and barely had any crying jags & the feeding schedule was once a night. I've never had a kid do that.

But there are tons of teenagers who DON'T get pregnant or have sex. I think that their parents giving them proper guidance and information makes it easier for them to decide to wait until they are more mature before having sex.

I don't think that the media is to blame. In fact i believe anyone who says that is a poor parent. Just hear me out before you give me a thumbs down. Since when did parents let the media raise their children. If you don't like what your child watches/reads take that away. Talking to your child yourself not letting sex educators do it for you. the talk is uncomfortable yes. Getting an STD or a baby is even more uncomfortable. I think that parents need to forget how uncomfortable it is to talk about something so intimate and talk to their kids about the consequences of sex. STOP BLAMING THE MEDIA!!!!!!!!

I am glad that you posted this for I was just watching E-News Weekend (for news on Heath Ledger) and all I heard was
who is having a baby or "look at the baby bump!"

So yes I think that makes a younger girl think that a baby is a toy or pet, you can play with and when done go on with life. That is where you run into problems from the effects of media on kids!!

I am a mom to a 5 year old little gitl!! I am always trying to think of how to explaine things that she sees on a dialy bais.. I think to parent today is a job in its self!!

To be honest we should get paid to raise kids today, with all the news media, that should be stopped!! I would like to see a married celb couple stay together for a longer time than 1 or 4 years. See the girls be married before having babies.. Set the example for the rest of the girls that look up to them!!

Yet that is not going to happen!! I think it is Funny how the Media went crazy over Jamie Lynn's pregnancy, but how many young pregnant girls do we see every day? I know at least 15 or so!! What makes her different??

Look at her sister, at least she can be used as an example of how not to parent, but the media is making her look worse than she probably is to begian with!!

I feel that we as parents just have to instill the right morals in our kids, then pray that they are going to use the morals to live a great life!!
