Slaughter-House 5 by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. It's science fiction/WWII history, and there is a romance between the protagonist and a movie star. Also, it has a happy ending, well, by KVj standards...

i'm afraid there isn't a lot of truly romantic science fiction, that i know of. i'm wracking my brain, but nothing's coming up.

there are good romances in mary doria russell's "the sparrow" and ursula le guin's "the dispossessed," but the books aren't about romance.

jonathan lethem's "as she climbed across the table" is about a physicist who falls in love with a black hole, much to the consternation of her husband. but it's more parody than romance.

"1984" by george orwell has a tragic romance at its heart, but again, the book itself isn't a romance.

there's an interesting romantic/sexual relationship between humans and an android in scott westerfeld's adult novel "evolution's darling."

if the books won't do it, why not get him a dvd of "the fifth element"? (by the way, the fifth element is love.)

I would have to say "Stranger in a Strange Land" by Robert A. Heinlein.

The book really frames the idea of love in a very beautiful way. It was actually used by the "Free Love" movement as a template. I have recommended it to several people and they have all loved it. Warning; the language is a bit dated as are some aspects of gender roles.

You will also learn about he word "Grok". Which is a science fiction staple.

I think "Burning Chrome" by William Gibson can be very romantic (in some stories) and could be a perfect Valentine's gift. Even for someone who isn't a diehard sci-fi fan.
Short stories are a great choice for a gift because there are more chances that at least one story will get to your core.

"The Man in the High Castle" by Phillip K. Dick would be cool too.

L Ron Hubbard's Battlefield Earth is awesome.
There's a reason they made a movie out of it.

Also try Snowcrash and Cryptonomicon, for earth-based not-futuristic scifi with more imagination than action.

since he has probobly has read all the big ones like "Dune," here's some great ones that he may have missed. By the author of Ender's Game, there's a brand new one out which is the prelude to Ender's Game. I've forgotten the name, but if u want something special for him, just search for Orson Scott Card and you'll figure it out.

another is Bicentinial Man by Asimov. This is also a movie with Robin Williams. If this friend is real special, why not get the movie and the book- this would be very thoughtful!
