Whey is a byproduct of cheese production:
Whey is one of the components which separates from milk after rennet (a byproduct of veal production) is added.
Natural calf rennet is extracted from the inner mucosa of the fourth stomach chamber (the abomasum) of young calves.
Meaning that whey can contain animal making it unsuitable for vegetarians.
Some companys are beginning to use vegetable rennet which would mean the whey is not made of calves. You need to make sure by checking the product online or phoning the manufactures.
