What do you think of this quote re: Hillary Clinton?

From the Great and Powerful Pags (as in Camille Paglia):

"Hillary's willingness to tolerate Bill's compulsive philandering is a function of her general contempt for men. She distrusts them and feels morally superior to them."

Is there any validity to this claim? Are women identifying with this? Did they really turn out en masse because Big Hil' turned on the waterworks?

I think Hillary's willingness to tolerate Bill's activities is based far more in her desire to work through problems rather than just divorce them. I think they genuinely care for one another and like one another and his activities are less of an issue than they may appear to be to the general public.

Maybe she tolerated it because she wanted to keep her image up as a strong woman who can handle anything because she knew she'd try to run for President sometime.

I don't think it has anything to do with not trusting men. What man hasn't been hurt by a woman's actions? They're just picking and choosing what part of Hillary they want to portray and running away with it.

I don't agree with her views necessarily, but no I don't think this quote applies to her.

Thats an interesting quote, and there might very well be some truth to it. It's almost as if Bill is just a goofy pet to her at this point, but she keeps him around because in order to be President she needs a subservient husband to follow her?

I could see how some women might operate that way. I don't personally know Hillary Clinton, so I couldn't comment on her personality. It could simply be a function of feeling superior to most other people, so you end up settling for a jerk off husband because you know there are so few people out there who could remotely meet your standards - you just make peace with the stupid people.

I tend to take this approach to relationships, so I can somewhat relate to what this woman is saying. There doesn't have to be any special feelings of contempt or distrust toward men for someone to act this way, though. I don't think there's any need to drag men, specifically, into the picture. Contempt for the 99.9% of the world's population which is completely stupid and asinine would work just as well.

Hmmm...I don't think so. The very first man in her life was her dad. Have you ever heard her speak about him? I have. You can see a genuine love, admiration and affection there.
As for the tears. I don't believe her tears influenced the vote. That's all media spin.

having already expressed to you my feelings regarding infidelity in previous posts, i ask what's all the hooplah? i can only guess as to their personal motivations in continuing their marriage but it seems to me he enjoys sex and she does not. i can't fault either. to each their own.

That's just another ploy against Hillary's campaign. She's a very smart woman and I think there's lots of men who feel threatened by that, so they dump all over her. The women who dislike her are just sheep. I plan on voting for Hillary and so will everyone else I know. No matter what people say, I am not voting for Obama and nobody in my family is, either.

This topic always gets to me. If she had tried to divorce Bill while he was a sitting president, she would have been criticized for dragging the nation through even more scandal (divorce court records are open to the press) and for diverting his attention away from his work to argue over who got the silverware and sofas. The conservatives would have been shouting about not going to couples counseling (which they did do) to try to save their marry. Yes, she had every right to leave him but had the strength to stay with the whole world watching. She could have taken the selfish route and not cared that it did to the country while the press followed her every move as she settled else where.

Regarding your question: I have no idea if she feels morally superior to men and distrusts them. The public side she shows the world doesn't back that up and very few people get to see the private side of her.

As for the teary eyed (not actually tears---I saw the clip probably 8 times yesterday) episode, one reporter said IF that did cause women to vote for her it wasn't the tears that did it, but rather the unfair media coverage of it. It smacked of sexism big time. After all, many other politicians have had their teary eyed moments as well including the two Bushes. (Colbert---on his comedy show---did a whole slide show of male politicians crying.)

I don't think Camille Paglia is close enough to the Clintons to know Hillary's motivation for how she handles her marriage. I think that remark comes from out of left field.

I also didn't see "waterworks." I saw a mild display of emotion. No one can ever really speak to the reasons another person votes a certain way. But I can speak for myself--if a candidate shows emotion or fails to show emotion, it doesn't change their position on the issues. So it doesn't change my vote.

I totally agree with that assessment. Hillary does feel morally and every other way superior to men...she is contemptuous of many people and has delusions of grandeur about herself, she has always demonstrated a remarkable(and quite false) sense of superiority and frequently wears a look of vague disapproval. I would hazard a guess that Bill's philandering took place after she had beaten him down to a point where he had to look elsewhere for what he was not receiving from his wife.
