Do you agree with Ron Paul's stance on affirmative action?

In 1997, Paul voted to end affirmative action in college admissions. Paul criticizes both racism and obsession with racial identity:

"Racism is simply an ugly form of collectivism, the mindset that views humans strictly as members of groups rather than individuals. Racists believe that all individuals who share superficial physical characteristics are alike: as collectivists, racists think only in terms of groups. By encouraging Americans to adopt a group mentality, the advocates of so-called 'diversity' actually perpetuate racism. Their obsession with racial group identity is inherently racist."

Agree or disagree? Why or why not?

Thanks everyone so far for the well-thought-out opinions! I'm not a republican, but I like Ron Paul's stance on foreign policy. I was reading up on his other views, and this struck me as interesting. Glad to hear what you all think :-)

I agree. The irony of Affirmative Action is that it is in itself racist. It assumes that people of a certain color are unable to find jobs, get into college etc. on their own merit, so they somehow need help to do so. I am a woman and I am aware that discrimination exists. However, I want to do something of my own accord or not at all. We will have true equality of the races only when we stop talking about it.

I don't know if I would go so far as to agree that affirmative action is racist. It is helping minorities to get into colleges or jobs. It is not hatred toward them; it is not detering them from success. Thus, it is not racism which believes one group is superior and another inferior.

I am, like him, against affirmative action. I don't believe (caucasian) people who have no prejudices should have to pay for the mistakes of their ancestors. Also, it is not the current minorities being victimized, but it was their ancestors who were. We need to get over the racism of the past, as well as the present, and move on.

Qualifications should be more important than choice based on race.

He's wrong , when college deans and professors use the n word it tells me that affirmative action is necessary , when you can honestly say racism against black people is over than affirmative action is not needed but until then it needs to continue to be implemented .
