Can a rubber gripper pad cause damage to a laminate floor?

When a rubber gripper pad is placed under an area rug to prevent slipping on a laminate floor is there any potential for damage? (There are some non-rubber products available , but they are rather expensive.)

Additional Details

I am also eyeing area rugs that have materials added to the backing to make them non-slip and feeling suspicious of those also. I was not successful in finding much on-line information on this subject, but will welcome any links you suggest. Thank You.

Yes they can. The rubber tends to darken the finish on the floor, if left for some time. And I'm guessing the area rug is meant to stay. You might want to invest in a non-rubber product, but only after you find out if it too can cause discoloration.
