The best leaders are those who can lead and direct without misuse of their power. They must be able to inspire others in a direction or greater good. They must be strong enough to stand firm in decision making and leading others without an egotistical attitude. A great team leader will encourage others to brain storm and contribute to the whole. They also lead by example and intelligently. They are also good listeners. Charisma helps a team leader.

Asker's Comment:
Rev TomCat expresses 2 things nicely:
1. A leader unfolds the full potential of the group, ultimately unfolding the full potential of society. Such a leader becomes silent as the group doesn’t continue to depend on him when they are able to lead themselves
2. Leadership is all about listening
Thanks
Nicely done, Rev. I based my answer on the response of Imam Ali Ibn Talib. who said "There is no wealth like KNOWLEDGE, no poverty like ignorance."

You cannot see that some of us REALLY do not feel this "need" for leadership. The language here denotes great fear--in living in a world without leaders. Dr. Deepak you are smart enough to think this through...do we really need this kind of fear dependence ingrained deep into our psyches?

I believe that a best leader is the one who look forward to everyone. In everyone's sight Gandhi JI was a brilliant leader, but he never look forward to his son.In my sight Benazir Bhutto was an extremly good leader. She always take care of Pakistan and also look forward to her family.Benazir was having all those qualities which a good leader should have.

i was in a team workshop where a range of senior leaders spoke to us recently. None inspired like the executive manager who spoke for 10 minutes using 3 powerpoint slides with a picture of a man on each slide. Each picture/slide conveyed a key point. At the break everyone wanted to work for him (different divisional head). He inspired, he lead with strength. His ideas showed conviction. Yes he wanted to do things his way, but we wanted to follow. I've worked for twenty years and now I have met a total of 3 managers who have affected me in this way. Managers lead us in every way of our human existence. Everything we do depends on them yet so so few are actually imbibe a desire to follow them. Sometimes we also need to remember in the imperfect human world that we live in, that a few prisoners need to be sacrificed by a leader i.e. though perhaps not morally the right thing to do, sometimes a leader needs to be a bit ruthless and political i.e. play the game to defeat and or better the game.

A great team leader (or just a "Leader") are all of the qualities already mentioned. But the word "Great" makes the question more than just qualities that the leader possesses. We must also consider the manner in which this person is the leader.

    1. Did this person seek to be the leader?
    2. Was this person forced to be a leader?
    3. Or did the person have leadership thrust upon him because of need and circumstance? But he definitely did not seek it or want it.

The reason for the above questions, defines the situation in which the leaders frame of mind is set.

    1. Self-glory and importance (a team of one)
    2. Takes responsibility but is distant from team members from lack of knowledge and self-confidence.
    3. leads for the people and for the situation(s) at hand, leading selflessly.

I think a good way to look at a great leader is to look at the fruits of his leadership. I do not mean the things that he has accomplished, but how they were accomplished, and why. I believe a great leader is only great when those he leads make him great. How do they do that? They make him great by willingly following him, trusting him, and loving him. He has earned this following by giving these things to his followers first. He uses their knowledge and expertise and makes them part of the solution. He teaches, trains, encourages, listens, and when those he leads reciprocate those things he is lifted to the status of a great leader by those he leads. Where the leaders heart is, there will his followers hearts be also.

The ability to communicate accurately and with integrity. The best leaders let their heartfelt passions come through to inspire everyone to do their best for the common cause. When a leader is not able to show that they are honestly behind the reason for the project, from their heart/core they lose the trust of the team and the likelihood of successful completion with a fully engaged team decreases greatly.

A good leader will never ask someone else to do something he wouldn't himself (or herself) do. A good leader will do the grunt work alongside those s/he leads. A good leader sets a good example, and sets the attitude and tone of a team. A good leader listens to suggestions and vents without inflicting punishment, even as they pick and choose the best ideas. A good leader welcomes team input even while being firm in his/her own decisions.

someone who can hold their head high and pull people succesfully through critical situations, makes good decisions and pulls people together promoting positivity and pride. Someone who has a good character, big heart, good mind, and puts theyre actions where their mouth is. Im 16, and im looking at the running politicians and very few of them will pull through with what they say.

A true leader is a person who is honest, caring, responsible and able to stand for what they believe in. They do what is right even when no one is looking and in doing right considers what is best for the majority.

A true leader is not a politician, statesman, world renowned actor/actress or celebrity. A true leader is the common man/woman who seeks to make a difference by doing what it takes to be a good example for and to others, its taking positive steps to make this world a better place and those around them better people.

Leader has to have many qualities.
Great leaders should have many more qualities.

Tthe topic is truely awakening and at the same time non-ending. I would touch some areas that I consider most important.

A great leader, or rather, an ideal leader should be at the back when things are normal. He should allow others to carry on. But in case of problem, he should be in front to provide guidance. A rare but important characteristic.

A great leader should have fore-sight. since planning and detailing are prime jobs of a leader, this is necessary.

A team leader should inspire when mission fails but give credit to others' efforts in case of success.

A smiling face is liked by all, a leader has to have it.

A leader can be successful only when team-mates have faith in his skills. Depending upon task, the skill requirement may differ. one has to have requisite skills or should develope. This indirectly means that a leader should be ready to grasp something if he does not have it.

A leader needs to be a bit flexible in operation but firm in notion.

I think I have said something, let others too say something.

A great team leader will hold the basic skills of being one to take responsibility, remain unbiased, direct with conviction and utilize every member of the team (build value).

These are a few basic needs, but I have come to realize that there is one need that many leaders do not see and should: knowledge.

A good team leader will recognize that he/she does not have all the answers and is not an expert in every single area that members of their team might have strengths in. When making a decision the leader should be educated about different areas of expertise and the team members should be one resource before making those decisions. Considering all options will educate the leader and make a better decision for everyone without involving too many pple in the actual decision made. An open ear and humble character ready to listen strengthens the team.

The first quality is confidence in him or herself. The ability of see innate abilities in those he leads and encouraging those that lack confidence. Able to see a bigger future for his organization. Willing to step back and let other shine. A great leader is inclusive and knows that the whole of the organization is great the the sum of it parts. Must posses the tenacity of a bulldog during tough times but also be pragmatic at the same time.
