What do mattress retailers do with your old mattress?
Does anyone work for a furniture retail company that delivers new mattresses, and picks up your old mattress? I'd like to know if they take the mattresses to the landfill. If so, how much does the landfill charge?
I am from Michigan, and am sure that it varies by location.

just someone concerned about the enviornment.

I've never worked in a furniture warehouse but this is from first hand expierence. Depending where you get your mattress and the condition of your old one, they will recycle them. If the frame is still good they just re-apholster it and sell it either to other dealers or customers. If its beyond salvageble they sometimes donate them or just shred what they can't use or recycle.

I believe some of them recycle the springs for scrap metal. The other parts are sometimes recycled into paper and such. I read that once somewhere and I wish I could tell you where. If you toss the mattress to the trash yourself, it then goes to the landfill.

They donate them to the homeless people that live under the highways.
