It's a form of insanity to answer this question with anything approaching seriousness. "Greatest" work of fiction? How could anyone determine that? It's impossible. I would say "Ulysses," but how do I know that was truly the greatest thing I've read? I enjoyed "Gravity's Rainbow" a great deal, so fine, let's say that's the greatest work of fiction I have ever read.

Asker's Comment:
Ulysses by James Joyce is often pointed to
as the "greatest" work in the English lang-
uage, but I found it to be really tedious going. Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon was also difficult, but I managed
to finish it. Nin's sheer luxuriousness of language in "House of Incest" sings to me.
