Before you move in, take a walk thru the apartment with the manager/ landlord. Take your digital camera.
Take at least two photos of each room -- get the windows, carpet, etc. Turn on each faucet, flush each toilet, start the dishwasher, etc.
Your job here, with the landlord present, is to document the current condition of the apartment. The biggest problem most first-time renters encounter is the manager trying to charge them for repairs. These photos will help you avoid penalties when you finally move out.
Don't assume that the landlord won't mind that you 'fix' something -- be sure you have permission before you paint, remove carpet, or do anything that changes the basic condition of the apartment.
Introduce yourself to the neighbors, so that they watch out for you -- if a package is delivered, your car gets backed into, your place gets broken into, whatever -- a couple of neighbors that are aware of what is going on can be invaluable. Also, they can help you if something gets clogged or you need help moving, hanging curtains or whatever.
